About
Outram is a district located in the central part of Singapore, containing four sub-zones, mainly Pearl's Hill, People's Park, China Square and Chinatown.
History
Outram Road was named by the Municipality in 1858 after a British general, Sir James Outram (1803-1863), of the 1857 Indian Mutiny fame. General Outram and General Havelock were two of the leaders in the British army during the Indian mutiny.
It was here that Singapore 's earliest immigrants, particularly the Chinese settled in. Trade and commerce in the area expanded rapidly, and it not only housed in the immigrants but also their clan associations and temples.
South Bridge Road became a main thoroughfare and commercial corridor linking the town and the harbour in the early 1900s. Much of the area has been redeveloped over the years, though the unique character of Outram has been retained.
