About
Located in North-west Singapore, Kranji is a large estate with a lot of empty lane. The buildings in this district are all concentrated in Kranji Industrial Park. This district is also the home of Singapore Turf Club, which holds horse races at Kranji Race Course. Nearly the northernmost point in Singapore, Kranji is separated from Malaysia only by the Johor Straits, which makes up the district's coast. You can see Malaysia from Kranji, making it one of the more strategically important places in Singapore

History
The name “Kranji” originates from the Malay name for the local tamarind tree. A railway was built here in 1903, and was later linked to Malaysia. As such, Kranji became the access point from Singapore to Peninsular Malaysia, which was at the time known as the Federated Malay States.

The most significant site of historical importance in Kranji is Kranji War Memorial, which honours the soldiers who died protecting Singapore during World War II. This war memorial is also a cemetery holding the graves of some 40 000 soldiers from Australia , New Zealand and other parts of the British Commonwealth. Before this, however, the cemetery was used as a hospital burial ground.

Kranji Industrial Estate
This is an enormous industrial estate that concentrates on the construction sector. Many businesses here are involved in transportation, such as Huationg Inland Transport, SMRT Bus Limited and Kranji Motor Workshop. There is also abundance of timbre and steel manufacturing here, as the materials are often imported from Malaysia. South Asia Textiles and Regency Steel Asia, for example, are located here. Furniture warehouses are also located here, with many dealing in rattan and woodwork. Some industries dealing in water are also located here, including a branch of the PUB Water Reclamation Plant.

Recreation
Kranji, despite being largely industrial, is not without recreation. Here are some recreational facilities in this district:

  • Kranji Race Course
This is Singapore 's only venue for horse races. There are many stables here with horses owned by the Singapore Turf Club. Races usually held weekly. As betting is legal in Singapore, the horse-betting business is a thriving one.
  • Kranji Reservoir
Located close to Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve, Kranji Reservoir was created out of a freshwater river. This river was dammed to create a freshwater reservoir. This enclosure also contains a marsh. Sometimes known as Kranji River, this freshwater reserve is a popular mangrove for fishermen.
