What is Buckwheat?

Buckwheat is not a wheat or a grain, it is actually the seed of a broadleaf plant related to rhubarb. There are two types of buckwheat :
  • Common Buckwheat (Fagopyrium Esculentum Moench)
  • Tartary Buckwheat (Fagopyrium Tataricum Gartner) or "Bitter Buckwheat"

The main difference between these two types is that Tartary buckwheat contains more Rutin then common buckwheat.

Buckwheat can be grown annually and is characterised by its heart-shaped leaves. Buckwheat flowers can be white or white tinged with pink and can produce seeds in about 6 weeks and can grow about 75 cm tall. Buckwheat seeds are triangular in shape.

Buckwheat can be used in cooking, and it surpasses rice, wheat and corn on almost every measure of healthfulness (including the fact that rice, wheat, and corn are high on the glycemic scale, thus provoking a quick spike in blood sugar levels, a proven promoter of systemic inflammation).

BHP uses Tartary Buckwheat in its line of products.
