The online printing revolution started just before the turn of the century.  The internet and direct-to-plate technology collaborated with the widespread availability of powerful personal computers and desktop publishing software to create a new type of printer. New online printers streamlined the print buying process and brought wholesale printing to the general public.

The success of these young companies left some casualties. Cheap color printing and online ordering lowered the entry barrier, causing companies to downsize their creative process and lay off print buyers and art directors.  Without demanding print buyers and art directors as customers, online printers had no reason to pay attention to quality.  Dotcom startups, lacking color knowledge, expensive color managed work flows, internal calibration processes and a strong print background, wrote “pleasing color” in their terms and conditions and told customers they couldn’t guarantee color for gang run jobs.  The real casualty of the online color printing revolution was the color itself.

The quality and capabilities of a commercial print shop meet the online world.
