  • Belly Dancing taught by Eda
Contrary to what you may think, belly dancing, or more accurately known as oriental dance, did not originate as a dance of seduction done only by sexy temptresses to titillate the Sultan. For many centuries, this form of dance was less of a performance than it was a celebratory dance participated by everyone at joyous occasions such as weddings, birthdays, festivals, and other events that bring people together to party.

Eda, a former salsa student of the celebrated dance legion Keti Sherif and one the first salseras to perform internationally at the US West Coast Salsa Congress, is the fun-loving belly dancing instructor who is best known for her agile hip wiggles and sexy full-bodied curves. She feels that women should embrace dance to inculcate a sense of confidence not only in themselves but also in their bodies as well.

All fears of being the odd one out will dissipate as the class is filled with young and eager kindred souls. Eda filled the studio with energetic Middle Eastern tunes and will start it off with some basic movements of some head and waist wiggling, before moving onto the shoulder shimmy and finally the sensuous camel walk. While every new movement will be met by nervous laughter, gradually a surge of self confidence will take over and the groove will just command you. Constantly encouraging, Eda is a patient soul who makes sure that everyone gets the essence of all the individual moves before moving onto more advanced steps. Overall, this session was a vibrant and fun exposure to the art of middle-eastern dance that is really a refreshing breather from the usual.
