Ma Maison: A home in the city

Ma Masion, which translates to my home in French, is a one-of-a-kind Japanese restaurant that offers an unmistakable homely dining experience in the heart of the city. Visually arresting decor coupled with equally high quality food makes dining at this restaurant an experience to behold. To date, Ma Maison has served diners for more than 15 years at its Bugis Junction home and recently celebrated the opening of a new outlet at Central.

The Vibe
Upon stepping into the dark enclaves of Ma Maison, you are immediately whisked away from the hustle and bustle of city life into the warmth and comfort of home. Aside from the sound of soothing jazz, the restaurant is cleverly decorated with antique crockery, vintage car models and other old school memorabilia to give it an appealing old world charm. It is clear that painstaking effort has been made to ensure that each and every customer feels at home while dining at the restaurant.

The Food
This is where Ma Masion sets itself apart from its Japanese counterparts in Singapore. A smart infusion of French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese cuisine serves to provide a unique and sumptuous fare that leaves you craving for more.

I particularly enjoyed the Hamburger Steak ($16) which was grilled to juicy perfection with just the right tenderness and flavour. To top it off, the sauce used for the steak is simmered for 28 days to bring out the richness of its flavour.

According to its staff, every single sauce and dressing offered at the restaurant is homemade and unique to Ma Masion. This further enhances the home dining concept while still offering that something special.

But just in case you are craving for a little seafood, the restaurant serves excellent soft and silky Escargots ($9.50) that are cooked with delightfully fragrant garlic butter. As you sink your teeth into each escargot, a rich buttery taste oozes out to the delight of your taste buds.

Another interesting seafood offering would be its Paella ($23.80) which comes with generous portions of fresh seafood, perched atop rice that is fried to near perfection.

Mouth-watering deserts at Ma Masion ensure that you leave the restaurant with a smile on your face. Be sure to leave some space in your gut for its delicious Caramel Pudding ($4.80). Without being too heavy or rich, the creamy pudding complements your meal in the best possible manner.
The Service
Japanese hospitality reigns supreme at this restaurant as the service staffs go the extra mile to keep you satisfied. Recommendations offered turned out well and commendable effort was made to engage in friendly banter with the diners. That said, it remains to be seen if such exemplary customer service can be replicated when the restaurant is packed with the peak hour crowd.

The SD Food Advisor’s take on Ma Maison
Ma Masion is undoubtedly one of the best value for money Japanese restaurant in its class. For $20-$30, you can get yourself an utterly satisfying and hearty meal as well as a comforting escape from city life. A home in the city? You have found the answer.
