2012 Trends

Classic Contemporary

Classic contemporary never really goes out of style. But this year you will be seeing a more refined look on this motif, with clean lines and striking quiet contrast on details through combination of textures, color unity, and sophisticated proportioning of furniture and décor.

Outdoor Extension

Outdoor living extensions were brought about by society’s growing focus on green living. Hand in hand with the recent explosion of café and alfresco dining culture, designed spaces open up to gardens and nature. Activity areas are pushed out to these private outdoor spaces which are seamlessly blended to the interior space.

Open Space Plan

The open space layout is increasingly becoming the norm, with the highly busy and fast changing city life and urban migration increasing. The surplus of smaller living spaces has given way to maximized area usage with overlapping functional areas. Open layouts have 3 integral living spaces combined: the living area, the kitchen, and the dining area, which can also be called the family triangle, have become the favoured option for many. This seeming fusion of space is divided thru many ways. It is divided either by furniture layout, color emphasis, or feature accents (like dropped ceilings, counter feature, archway, etc…)

In an open space plan, clutter is put away in hidden in inconspicuous storage cabinets or alcoves. Less bulky overhead cabinets with a lot of counter space for kitchens, and floor to ceiling high shelving to display some books or décor items.

Green Design

Green design will be more apparent in the coming years. As the depression in the economy progresses, people will be looking for cheaper alternatives to build and design homes and commercial spaces. You will be seeing a lot of practical usage of elements in relation to energy and space saving capabilities and creative ways of applying dual functioning or multipurpose design features. Unconventionally applied materials will also be something to look forward to, with the rise of usage of recyclable materials in the market and the rise of the diy craft culture in the younger generations. Faux wood materials, raw and plain finishes combined with strikingly bold and simple details shall be expected.
