Case Outline

An indoor multi-sport hall with total area of 2546m² (38.0 x 67.0 meters) consists of a main basketball court and twelve badminton courts surrounding the perimeter. The premises was originally fitted with 80 units of 1000 watts high pressure sodium (HPS) floodlights. The lighting design was based on basketball court of training level with an average illuminance of 300 lux and occasionally switch to premier level of 500 lux. For the purpose of this project, owner intended to upgrade the lighting design to premier level of 500 lux and switchable to international level of 1000 lux on floor area for live telecast reason.

Facts finding

The following information was provided by the operator for study of the possibility to upgrading by using LED luminaire as alternative of high pressure sodium floodlights:

• The 80 units of 1000W HPS floodlight are positioned above the multi-sport hall along 5 rows of mounting frameworks at 12 meters high.
• The illuminance flux on floor level was estimated to approximately 300 lux or thereabout.
•  The color temperature of light are cool white (3900~4000K);
• The room ambient temperature was maintained at the level of 25~26°C;
• Operator wish to upgrade the luminance flux to international level for basketball court and switchable to premier level without changing the existing lighting profile.

Solutions

80 units of 350W FM3450 high intensity LED floodlight were recommended for replacement of the existing 1000W metal halide fixture basing on the following criterions:

• The fixture is fitted with remote potentiometer LED driver for switching of lighting classification from Class II to Class I of EN12193-2007.
• Dimming wires of all the potentiometer drivers would be interfaced in series that lights could be switching from Class II to Class I or vice versa with single dimmer switch.
• Lighting profile: basing on one-to-one replacement of the existing 1000 watts HPS floodlight;

• Illuminance flux on floor: ≥1038 lux (Eav) that meets the live telecast requirements for international tournament level.
• Uniformity: 0.467 (u0).
• Correlated color temperature (CCT): 4000~4500K.
• Beam angle of luminaire: 30 degree.
• Color rendering: >80.
• No environmental impact would be anticipated.
• Glaring index: UGR ≤25
• No flickering of light illumination was anticipated
• Total luminous of luminaire: 2824992 lumen or 35312 lumen per unit;
• Power consumption per luminaire: 346.2W (system power);
• Total power consumption: 27.7KW;
