lightings for sheltered carpark

Basement and multi-storey carpark are respectively regarded as sheltered carpark. For safety reasons, lighting design would be essentially required to illuminate parking bay, driveways, ramps, corners, intersections, vehicular entrance and exit as well as pedestrian and staircase, etc.

There is more to lighting for a sheltered carpark that the illuminance of horizontal illuminance (floor level) and vertical illuminance (1.5 meter above ground level). the overall appearance of illumination of the sheltered carpark should however maintain free from dark corners and the faces of the pedestrain could be visulized at a distance of not less than 60 meters

Since 6630 compact LED batten series was introduced in 2012, it has been generally recommended by the lighting designers and field maintenance service contractors as an alternative of traditional weatherproof fluorescent batten.

The following scenario may be used as guideline for upgrading or new built sheltered carpark lighting projects:

  • Driveway and parking bay: The common code of practice recommended that driveway should maintain an average illuminance of ≥75 lux free from glaring. In this respect, it is therefore proposed using 25W (model 663100-W25K5) pure white (5500K) unit for this area.
  • Ramp, corners, intersections: This could be a high risk area that an average illuminance level should maintain not lower than 150 lux. Thus, 35W 5500K (model 663100-W35) unit is recommended.
  • Entrance and exit zones:Natural daylight used to be available in the entrance and exit zones of sheltered carpark. Therefore, brightness before and after sunset should however take into consideration in the lighting system. The common practice suggested that the illuminance level before and after sunset should maintain not less than 300 lux, and 100 lux respectively. In this respect, it is recommended that 30W with 5500K (model 663100-W30K5) would be used to comply with the technical requirements.
  • Pedestrain walkway, staircase:Safety measure should be taken into consideration in the design of lighting system. It is not only required to provide adequate visibility between the drivers and the pedestrain, but also for evacuation in the event of hazardous occurrence. The common practice suggested that an average of not less than 100 lux for this area should be maintained. In this respect, it is therefore recommended using 18W 6760S compact LED batten (model 6760S-084W18K5)  or 6760B (6760B-084W18K5 featuring with power supply pack) for this area.
