There are many instances when a fascia might need repair. It could be that the rainwater has resulted in rotting wood or that the edges are damaged. Whatever the reason maybe, you can do many of the repairs over your board by yourself.
Rotting fascia
If you find that your fascia is rotting on account of water seepage, there is a certain way to repair it. Many people suggest using a metal sheet to cover up the wood. However, in order to proceed, you also need a sealant or filler that will provide insulation of the wood from metal sheet. However, experts are of the opinion that the best way to target a rotting board is by estimating the root cause. The rotting could have happened because of excess overhang of the shingles. It could also be that drip edge was not installed or had been installed improperly. In the case where boxed soffits have been used, the water could have been seeping into the backside of the board. Experts also suggest that instead of going through the rigmarole and hassle of repairing rotting fascia, it is a more practical alternative to replace them. You just need to get a new board and nail it on and finally paint it as per a colour of your choice.
Light damages
There are times when the fascia is not completely damaged. In such cases, a small repair job can do the trick. You can repair the damaged portion of the board using Epoxy wood, which hardens with time. Once the wood hardens, you can sand it, saw it, drill, nail and lacquer or paint it as per your convenience and preference.
Fungicides
If it is a small portion of your board which is damaged, you can simply remove it with a saw. Then you can place a fungicide material in this cavity. This will curtail any rot that is spreading in the wood and will also help prevent any future decays from happening on the fascia. Always make sure that you use a safe chemical whilst buying a fungicide for repairing the rot. Ideally, it should be eco-friendly as well.
Mildew
Dampness usually occurs on fascia areas that do not get direct sunlight. Typically, mildew manifests itself deep down in the wood and hence, superficial repair methods ceased to work. You can prepare your own homemade solution to tackle this mildew. Take a mixture of three-quarts of warm water and then add laundry bleach solution to this. Then mix some powder detergent to this solution. The main component you need to remove mildew from board is called TSP or Tri Sodium Phosphate. Most paint shops will have this chemical stocked. Make sure to add three-quarters of this TSP into the solution. Mix the solution thoroughly to get an even emulsion. You can simply take a scrubbing brush with thick bristles to apply the solution onto the mildew-affected board. Make sure that you have rubber gloves on whilst applying the solution and adequate eye protective gear.
