As with any new business, if you're just starting out in internet marketing, you are probably overwhelmed with how much you have to do. If you have been doing any research online, you are probably also overwhelmed with the amount of resources and advice available to you on how to get started. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you move forward in your new venture.



Focus on a high quality internet presence first.

You will be tempted to jump ahead to making money as quickly as you can (who doesn't want that?), but you need to build your internet presence first. Remember, the more ways that people can find you and what you have to offer, the better. If you already have a website, that's great. If not, you should get one started as soon as possible. Also consider getting a presence on some social networking sites (my space, etc.) and writing some articles for sites like Squidoo and Hubpages. You will include links to your main website or whatever sites you are using to generate income. The wider you cast your net, the more likely you are to catch a fish (so to speak).

Provide high quality content, rather than a sales pitch.

Most people who are new to internet marketing make the mistake of writing everything like a sales pitch. Not only is that a real turn off for people, but it actually makes it more difficult for them to determine if you have something they really want and need. Provide solid, useful, free information about your niche topic. People are more likely to buy from people they trust. You can develop trust and respect from your audience by establishing yourself as an expert in your field by providing high quality content.

Don't spend a lot of money in the first 90 days.

As you surf all of the resources available to you as an internet marketer, you will be tempted to spend a bunch of money for this service or that. There are hundreds of e-books, online money-making systems, etc. If you start buying them at the beginning of your journey, you'll find that you are even more overwhelmed with "advice" and that you have spent more money that you need to spend. Focus on free (or very inexpensive) services in the beginning until you have your internet presence developed. Once your foundation is built, you will have enough experience to start shopping for the online services that will benefit you the most.

Keep an open mind.

The most important characteristic of an entrepreneur is that he remains open to opportunity, even from unexpected sources. If someone tells you that he has the best way of doing something and that it is the only way you should do it, be very wary. Also, you may have jumped into internet marketing because you became intrigued by some affiliate programs or a particular network marketing opportunity, but don't have to limit yourself to the opportunity that brought you here. You may find that the product or service that really makes you the best money is not the one your started with at all.

Treat your new internet marketing business like a real job.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. You will have to work to make your internet marketing business successful. You will have to spend time on it. In the beginning, schedule work hours for yourself just like you would schedule a job. If you are planning to put in a part-time effort of 10 hours per week, put those hours on your calendar. If you are planning on working more or less hours, that's fine, but schedule it. Make sure your time is spent productively and that you do something each day to move closer toward your goal of making an excellent income through internet marketing.
