6 Misconceptions About Liposuction

    View:
When we get older, our body begins to change in ways that are unexpected and somewhat devastating to our ego. We notice that despite our daily exercise routine and proper diet, stubborn fat clings to us like a lost puppy. If you're considering liposuction but aren't sure whether it's right for you, consider these 6 misconceptions about the procedure before making a decision.

Misconception 1: Liposuction Can Make You Lose Weight

Although Liposuction removes fat cells from the stomach, buttocks, thighs, arms and back, it will not make you lose weight. Liposuction should be an option that is combined with a healthy diet and an appropriate exercise regime. Not everyone loses weight as easily as others do. Some individuals have a hard time getting rid of excess fat even though they diet and exercise. Liposuction is intended for this type of situation, and it is not a cure for weight gain.

Misconception 2: Liposuction Will Eliminate Cellulite

Cellulite and fat are two different things. Cellulite is caused by the uneven rate of absorption by fat cells, making fatty tissues uneven in appearance. Liposuction can actually make cellulite worse. If you're looking to get rid of ugly cellulite, consider mesotherapy. It fights fat at the essential core and is a safe form of treatment for cellulite and fat. Other benefits of mesotherapy for treating cellulite include: a. Improved blood flow to the specific area b. Dissolution of excess fat deposits c. Removal of fibrotic, hardened connective tissues d.mproved lymphatic drainage Mesotherapy vs. liposuction e.Mesotherapy is a non-invasive procedure f. Mesotherapy removes fat from the fat cells g. Mesotherapy is used wherever there is cellulite h. Mesotherapy requires no downtime

Misconception 3: Liposuction Will Get Rid of Flabby or Excess Skin

Since liposuction is geared towards removing fat cells from the body, it cannot get rid of skin that is sagging from losing a large amount of weight. If this is what you need, consider a tummy tuck, which involves surgically removing excess skin and fat from the middle and lower part of the abdomen. In some instances, it may tighten the abdominal muscles. Liposuction will not give you that ??chiseled, 6-pack abs?? look. Although liposuction does smooth and contour treated areas, you need to build muscle to achieve a sculpted look.

Misconception 4: Fat Won't Come Back After Liposuction...Ever!

This is one of the leading misconceptions about liposuction. Most people believe they no longer need to eat sensibly or exercise because most of the fat cells in a particular part of their body have been removed. However, not all fat cells are removed during liposuction. If a patient gains a significant amount of weight, the treated area(s) will get larger. If you begin to gain weight after liposuction, the fat will eventually begin to accumulate in untreated areas of the body.

Misconception 5: Liposuction Will Solve My Body Issues

Reports have shown that many people who have liposuction experience a boost in their self-esteem, but it is not a cure to severe body issues. If you suffer from eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, etc.) and think liposuction can cure these problems, think again. In fact, having liposuction done in combination with an eating disorder can be disastrous, since people who suffer from these types of disorders are rarely ever satisfied with the way their body looks. Eating disorders aren't the only issues people deal with. Some who suffer from depression believe that changing how they look will somehow improve how they feel. If this is the case, liposuction will only be a temporary cure to the underlying problem. If you believe you have an eating disorder or suffer from depression, please consult your physician or seek professional counseling.

Misconception 6: You'll See Immediate Results

Don't be surprised when you wake up from surgery and actually look bigger than when you came in. After liposuction, you will experience some swelling that could last several days or weeks. Many times patients can also weigh more immediately after the procedure than they did just before the procedure, which is due to fluid retention. Some people also get very discouraged when they don't see results within the first few days. Significant improvements can be seen anywhere from two weeks to four months.
