“Show Me Your Watch then I shall tell youwhat sort of person you are"! This is a not so well knownSwedishsaying, but there the subject was shoes. Wristwatch or shoes – the principle is the same; it is not a coincidence what you are wearing! As a psychologist I have dealt withcountlesspeople in all kinds of circumctances. Having been in contact with probably more than100.000 people over the years, I have not only started to pay attention to similarities in dresscode and behaviour patterns of people of the approximate age, with similar line of work, the same advantages and disadvantages passions, etc.; as a matter of fact, I have actually started to categorize them in my mind. And I am certainly not by any means unique havingthisexperience or ability. Many people visit a fortune-teller, thinkingthat he or she possesses some spiritual insightfuturethings. People have this perception becausethe fortune-teller have been able to tell them so much about them “that no man could know by natural means". But they do not know the secrets of the trade, that how they are dressed, their choice of accessories, their haircuts , the companionship they keep , (and how they behave towards them), their gestures, if their eyes are shifty, if they are clean and neat and shaved, if they use profanity, etc., speaks volumes about a persons past and present. An abilityto read these signs does not make fortune-tellers into oracles. Most likely everybody is evaluating people like this, based on demeanour and physical object. How successful one becomesat it probably depend on talent and how many people one gets to meet over the years. And one more thing; the abilitywill be aquired with greater speed after having become aware of the phenomena itself. What I mean is; we all do it without thinking about it, but not very many know what they are doing, if they were to become better at it they could profit from it. And since I know about this process I say; “Show me your watch". Of course, it is not risk-free to put forth such a challange, everything concidered, a watch is only one isolated stimulus, not much to build a description upon. The job would be less of a challange if I saw the person come up to me and deliver his watch. Then I would seehis clothes, his hair, his stride, his eyes, his body language, and, finally, the watch. It should not come as a surprice, the wristwatch would have the least information to offer. With some watches it is not so hard to see who is the typical owner. With such watches it is possible to be very detailed in describing the owner. And then there are wristwatches that are close to impossible to read. So, descriptions´of the owner of that type of watches must by necessity be very sketchy. Every single wristwatch mustbe looked upon as an approximation. For instance; owner-analysis mentionssomeone who is a plumber, it should not be construed as a failure if he turns out to be a carpenter. After all, they both work the same hours, the same work-place, the same attire, the same employer, etc. In fact, quite often they do each others jobs, too. What's the whole idea of doing something like this, anyway? I can think of many good reasons. It is obvious that analysing physical objects is just one smallpart of forensic psychology, which is quite useful in some cases. Forensic psychologists, though, have huge databases where they can place all the information about everything. Others will have to rely upon their brains; which is good, since there will never be any databasesbuiltthat would be able to includeevery type of object, such as wristwatches. Another reason is to help people selling watches to find a watch to an identified buyer. And reversing it, it can help someone find a timepiece which is compatible with who they are. If they find a watch they like, and the description fits them fairly well, then, chances are. One more situation in which to use the watch owner-analysis is when you meet new people, and form your own opinion about them, you can use this analysis to give strength to your own opinion about this person, or not! It must never be used on its own! Watch owner-analysis is first and foremost done for amusement purposes. One should rememberthat wristwatches were sold long before they were analyzed, and it seemed to work fine.
