Clocks are instruments that are used to measure, indicate, and keep time and they are also collectibles for collectors all over the world. A variety of clocks are available for collecting, which include cuckoo clocks, alarm clocks, mantel clocks, musical clocks, and so many more that collectors are focusing their collections on.



One of the earliest inventions of man was a type of primitive clock known as a sundial and the water clock. Through the years clocks have become invaluable to man, as they have even helped in navigation during the exploration, which began during the fifteenth century. Precise navigation does require knowing exactly what time it is, and probably pushed the development of even more accurate clocks.

Normally, clocks are categorized by the different types of mechanisms that they use in which to measure the passing of time, but they can also be categorized by the variety of displays that are used to tell the current time. Typically there are mechanical analogue clocks that show hours, minutes, and seconds on their faces. There are also digital clocks that do not have any moving parts, but are either LCD or LED and have numeric displays for showing the time.

Throughout history, mechanical clocks use a variety of different mechanisms to show the current time with many of them having striking mechanisms like gongs, bells, or chimes, which lets you know the passing of hours, half hours, and some times quarter hours. Of course, there are some mechanical clocks that are silent and are referred to as timepieces instead of clocks. There are some clocks that have no clock working parts at all and they are able to measure time simply by using tiny movements of quartz crystals or vibrations of a tuning fork. These non mechanical clocks have either a digital display or a few may even have an analogue display.

Collectors have a variety of styles, shapes, and sizes of clocks available to base their clock collections on, which include wood, metal, and plastic. There are some other more hard durable materials that are used and these clocks are available in a variety of designs that will go with just about any decor. Today there are clocks being made that are highly decorative and older clocks have a type of distinction that newer clocks lack, but what ever type of clock the collector is basing their collection on they can range in a variety of prices and styles.

Collectors all over the world have fallen in love with Cuckoo Clocks and that is why they have become the most popular of all clocks for collectors. In fact, collectors have found that Cuckoo Clocks not only keep accurate time, but they will also entertain them at the stroke of each hour, half hour, and quarter hour. Typically, the design of Cuckoo Clocks look like wooden chalets or ski lodges hanging on the walls, which are normally made of wood and are decorated with carved leaves, flowers, and animals. Most Cuckoo Clocks will feature a carved cuckoo bird that will pop out through a tiny double door when even the clock begins striking at the top of the hour, and when the cuckoo bird appears the sound of cuckoo will be heard, which mimics the call of a real cuckoo bird.
