Do you think it is possible to live without shampoo? Lets explore some of the realities that this would create in our lives if it ever were to become a mainstay in American culture. Some people believe that the scalp can sustain solely on the bodys natural oils. They think that this will keep hair naturally glossy and clean.



There was a study done about two years ago where one man, who subscribed to the theory that hair can maintain its natural gloss and sheen independent of shampoo, decided to completely stop washing his hair for an indefinite amount of time. He then challenged five other women to do the same thing, but only for a period of one month. The results were interesting, and somewhat surprising.

One young woman, a 24 year old young professional decided to partake in the experiment and received astounding feedback. About three weeks into the hair challenge she invited her sister over to her apartment for dinner. The first thing her sister said to her when she came over was about her hair, but not at all the reaction she had been anticipating. Her sister went on and on about how wonderful her hair looked, asking her where she had gotten it done and when and how she could get the same style. The feedback was positive for the first contender, but that was definitely not the pattern that followed.

Another competitor in the great shampoo hair challenge had a much more uncomfortable overall experience. In less than a week of not shampooing her hair, she developed a terribly dry scalp which developed into a severe case of dandruff. Her body had become so accustomed to having shampoo every other day that even missing a few days resulted in such an irritated state.

Some people argue that Western Culture washes and shampoos their bodies too often that it robs them of their natural oils. They claim that all your body and scalp need is the natural oils and a good hair brushing everyday to keep it looking glossy, clean and protect it from any possible harm. It is even recommended to use fruit oil like olive oil on your hair to increase the sheen and protection. No one can be completely sure whether it would be better or worse to live in a world without shampoo, the choice is a personal one and will most likely stay that way.
