Having been a self-developmenttrainer for many years I have come to the conclusion that when looking at themany life skills that humans need to master in order to mould for themselves ajoyous, fulfilling and creative life, accelerated learning skills are probablythe most important of all.Not only dothese skills make a huge difference to the individual, they also have a massiveimpact on the corporate sector.Theannual figure spent on corporate training is colossal and yet without theimplementation of these foundation skills it is apparent that the vast majorityof this money, representing thousands of pounds, is being totally wasted.
As opposed to the ?one career?life typical of yesteryear, in today's age most people are being required tomake several changes during their working life.It is predicted by Charles Handy, Professor of Economics, that in thegeneration to come it will not be unusual for someone to have between 5 and 7completely separate careers. This means that not only must we be adept atchange, but also comfortable and confident amongst this constant bombardment ofnew information and demand for learning. It is already the case that ?intellectually? talented people demandhigher salaries than those that are ?physically? advantaged, and this will beincreasingly so in the work environment that is developing.
In this ever-changing world withits fast pace, uncertainty and job insecurity, the only thing that is certainis uncertainty itself. In almost alloccupations knowledge is doubling every 2-3 years meaning that someone who isfully qualified in the year 1999 might find their qualifications woefullyinadequate by the year 2002.
As the economy in the worldshifts, people who are appropriately educated will tend to do best and thepremium that society will pay for such skills will climb.?Appropriate? education will be increasinglybiased towards the incorporation of accelerated learning techniques, which willprovide the core skills necessary to succeed and grow in the years tocome. It is important that you look uponlife as a lifelong adventure, and appreciate that the future belongs to thosewho are prepared to change and learn, and that to stand still is really to gobackwards
The most important aspect oflearning is being proficient in how to learn.Once you can master this ability, no new project, language or situationwill again overwhelm you.And once youpossess the basic techniques then, like riding a bicycle, they will be with youforever, meaning ?the world is your oyster?.
To increase your effectiveness instudying in this new age of information overload must you just push yourselfharder?Fortunately, the answer isNO.Rising stress levels caused by theneed to acquire boundless information forced a study of this issue and a searchfor solutions. The result was the set ofprinciples developed by academics and known internationally as ?acceleratedlearning?.This uses some of the recentadvances in cognitive science and offers an exciting new prospective onharnessing the whole brain's phenomenal capabilities.Accelerated learning offers ways to unlock anamazing array of cognitive skills.
?Exponentiallyincreased abilities for gathering, storing, comprehending, synthesising, sorting, implementing and retaining new-found knowledge.
?Improvedconcentration and efficiency for stress-free learning.
?Betterstrategic, critical and creative thinking.
Paradoxically, the strategy toaccess your huge hidden capabilities is not simply to push yourself harder butto work much more closely with your own hidden mind.Since these concepts are different from mosttraditional approaches to learning accelerated learning has developed avenuesto greatly facilitate whole and direct brain function.Accelerated learning improves our approach tostudy through learning, research and theory and the laws governing the functioningof the brain. And uses techniques that tap into your brain's amazing andawesome capabilities.
But before considering enteringupon the study of accelerated learning skills you should assess yourself ? doyou possess the two fundamental characteristics necessary without which youcannot even begin to develop yourself to your greatest potential?
1.Agenuine desire to want to learn, and
2.Astrong seated belief in your ability to learn.
Without fulfilling these basiccriteria all the techniques and skills in the world will be of no use whatsoeverand you will never fully develop.
So, what are Accelerated LearningTechniques? They are seven pillars, which combine to effectively provide a profoundly efficient and stress-freemethod of learning. These are:-
?Understandingthe power of the mind and how it works
?Recognisingthe nine intelligence ?types? and identifying your own
?Usingmind maps
?Usingmusic
?Speedreading
?Developingeffective memory techniques
?Knowinghow to study and learn
POWEROF THE MIND.Amazing as it sounds, it is only in the last 150 years that scientistshave pinpointed where our brain is, and the last 15-18 years that they havebegun to have a proper understanding of how it functions.Dr David Samuels of the Weizmamn Instituteestimated that underlying the brain's basic range of activities up to 1 millionchemical reactions take place every minute. There is a minimum of1,000,000,000,000 (one million million) individual neurons or nerve cells. This figure becomes even more amazing whenyou realise that each of your neurons can interact with up to 100,000 otherneurons in many ways at any one time.Infact, it has recently been estimated that the number of permutations may be 1followed by 800 zeros.A number tooenormous to think about. There reallyare no limitations whatsoever to the power of your brain. It is limitless.
INTELLIGENCE is not fixed but is a set of abilities and skillsapplied in a given context.A person canexcel in one situation, displaying impressive intelligence and yet appear at acomplete loss in another situation.Evaluated at its most basic level intelligence could be described as theability to Learn ? Retain ? Recall ?Apply. However, studied moreclosely, Professor Howard Gardner came up with the theory of multipleintelligences and it is now widely accepted that there are nine different?types? of intelligence ?
?linguistic/language
?mathematical/logical
?musical
?physical
?inter-personal
?intra-personal
?visio-spacial
?naturist
?spiritual.
Unfortunately, the educational system of today is derived from the 1830's Prussian system, which addresses and values only two of these intelligence types ?linguistic/language and mathematical/logical - and sadly fails those who fallinto one of the many other categories.By identifying your own natural type of intelligence you are able todevelop it to its full potential.Beyondthis, it is also possible to learn how to consciously exploit your full rangeof intelligences; a technique that ensures balanced learning, and the abilityto think in new and different ways.
MIND MAPPING is one of the fundamental keystones to acceleratedlearning. It is an invaluable devicedeveloped by Tony Buzan for learning, retaining, recalling and applyinginformation, which is designed to use the whole brain. It will strengthen ordevelop your strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. Indeed, mindmapping is such a powerful tool that it can revolutionise your completeapproach to work and life, allowing you to adapt a more dynamic, proactiveapproach to life and enhance your creativity.Mind mapping breaks away from the traditional method of ?linearlearning? (eg writing in lines) and uses patterns that work more efficientlywith your ?multi-dimensional? brain.Ifone had to choose just one of the accelerated learning skills it ismind-mapping that would have the most profound effect upon ones life.
LISTENING TO MUSIC that you enjoy is an uplifting experience, harmonising body and soul. However, usedproperly it is also an invaluable tool for effortlessly easing new informationinto your long-term memory.Music canmimic the brain's wavelength when it is in the receptive state forlearning. The left half of the brainrelates to the music's rhythm and sounds and the right side identifies with thetextures of each sound. Therefore, learning new words or information against a set musical pattern unites leftbrain activity (words) and right brain activity (music). For example, Bulgarian educator, Dr GeorgiLozanov, in his pioneering work with accelerated learning techniques carriedout extensive studies that demonstrated how Baroque music's steady tempo of 60beats per minute parallels the brains wavelength when in a state of relaxedalertness, called Alpha, and is conducive to learning and retention.
SPEED READING is a technique which is governed by understanding howthe eye interacts with the brain, recognising memory rhythms and adapting yourreading speed for different reading matter. The average person reads at the rate of 240 words per minute, and yet,it is quite possible to obtain the skill of reading up to 2000 or more wordsper minute. The problems typicallyexperienced by people include lack of concentration, poor recall, unsatisfactory level of understanding, limited attention span and the inabilityto deal with distractions. Many of theseproblems are routed in the traditional method of reading you were taught as achild.By re-adjusting this method mostof these problems are eliminated and you can become not only a faster readerbut a better one.
MEMORY.The belief that memory worsenswith age is a fallacy. In fact, thememory is like a muscle; the more it is used, the better it gets. And viceversa. So it is important to learn howto utilise your natural learning style to ease memory recall.According to the 80/20 rule which is takenfrom Perato's Law (Alfredo Perato, Italy, 1895) the average person loses 80% ofwhat is learnt within 24 hours, because it is not learned correctly.By learning the differing techniques andsystems available to improve memory skills, you can ensure that facts learnedare locked into long term memory.
HOW TO LEARN AND STUDY.Preparation is vital to any task. To enableeffective learning to take place painlessly you must first prepare themind.Accelerated learning techniqueswill show you how to gather information, without overload, sifting importantinformation from the superfluous.Theunique M.A.S.T.E.R. system will effectively enable you to fearlessly approachall future learning.
?M ? Prepare the mind forlearning
?A ? Acquire the information
?S ? Search out the meaning
?T ? Trigger the memory
?E ? Exhibit what you know
?R ? Reflect on how you learned
An increasing number of companiesare feeling the economic strain of providing necessary training, and arerealising that much of the money invested in this vital area is not justifiedby the subsequent results.Returning topeople who have attended courses after periods of one, three and six months, itis devastatingly apparent that very little of the course learning has beenretained, and even less implemented.If80% of learning is so rapidly lost it means that effectively 80% of thetraining budget is wasted. Therefore, itis essential that the basic skills of learning be absorbed first so thatsubsequent training is worthwhile.People need to have an understanding of how the brain works so that theycan use it in the most effective way, and once they have established the skillsincorporated within accelerated learning techniques they will find their lifevery much enhanced. Not only will it help them in their work but many otheraspects of their life.

Long before man (or woman, I'm not sure which), first put grilled fatty ground meat on white bread buns, or worked out how to pressure-fry chicken in fat-laden breadcrumbs, and thus invented obesity and the heart-attack, people were already striving to do everything faster. So we got fast food, instant coffee, supersonic travel, high-speed computers and communications, and so on.
Consider the massive advances in computing power since the middle of the last century. I'm sure many of you are familiar with ?Moore's Law?, (not to be confused with ?Cole's Law?, which is thinly sliced cabbage and onion in mayo). Moore's Law is really a rule of thumb, which suggests that computing power doubles every 12, 18 or 24 months -- depending upon who you listen to. Moore's Law of course was proposed by Gordon Earl Moore, co-founder of Intel (so Moore's profits also followed Moore's Law).
Moore's Law was first published on 19 April 1965 in ?Electronics Magazine? (a magazine famous for first publishing Moore's Law on 19 April 1965).
Moore lost his own copy of this magazine, but ultimately Intel bought a copy in 2005 for $10,000 from David Clarke, an English engineer who horded bundles of Electronics magazine under his floorboards, presumably in the hope that their value obeyed Moore's Law too (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4472549.stm).
Throughout history it was always assumed that there was not a lot one could do to learn faster. You just had to plod through the work, memorizing and repeating. In fact it was assumed that if you wanted to learn faster, you had to study for more hours each day. But this technique brings limited success, as the extra hours study make you more tired and so you can't absorb knowledge as easily, i.e. it is self-limiting and boring, and you end up spending more time, learning less.
The foundation for accelerated learning was laid in the mid 1970's by Dr. Georgi Lozanov, a Bulgarian professor and psychotherapist, his teaching methods incorporated music, art, role-playing and games. This work was later expanded and improved by the likes of Colin Rose.
To understand something of Accelerated Learning, first we need to understand something about the human brain (if you don't have one of these, please skip to the end of the article).
The brain can be considered to be three distinct layers, like layers in an onion, each layer functioning almost as a separate brain (author's note: although onions typically have more layers than the human brain, they do not seem to learn as quickly)
Layer 1, the Brain Stem
The lowest level brain (the innermost layer) -- the Brain Stem -- manages a lot of your ?hard-wired?, automatic functions such as your heartbeat, breathing, ?fight or flight? responses and so on. When I was about six years old someone told me that we don't have to think about breathing, we just do it subconsciously. Now I had never thought about breathing before (which in fact proves what this person had told me) but that night in bed I did think about it and I got really worried, that I might just ?forget? to breath! So I kept thinking, ?breathe in, breath out?. It was a very long night.
Layer 2, the Middle Brain
The next layer is the ?Middle Brain? of ?Limbic System?. This ?brain? controls your immune system, hormones, long-term memory, emotions and sexuality.
Many scientists believe in a religion called ?The Theory of Evolution? and they try to work this is wherever they can. So they call the Brain Stem, the ?reptilian brain? and say that it evolved first, and then the Middle Brain, which they call the ?mammalian brain?, evolved next. But they don't explain how all those poor dim ?reptilian brained? creatures survived without an immune system and sex.
Layer 3, the thinking brain
The final layer is the Thinking Brain or "Neocortex". The Thinking Brain surrounds the other two brains and as well as thinking, it includes your long-term memory and even your capacity for emotions. This brain is composed of about 100 billion brain cells (much less if you frequent the local ale house).
The cells look a bit like little spiders, and any ?spider? can hold a neighbors hand (make a connection) either permanently or temporarily, depending upon how much value your brain places on the connection. So your thinking brain may be thought of as a dating agency for spiders.
For example, your name is formed by a bunch of permanent connections, so you're not likely to forget it, whereas the color of a car that just passed is most likely a temporary connection and so you will not be able to recall it (or even misremember it) sometime in the future.
And luckily for the drinkers amongst us, your intelligence depends upon the number of connections that the brain cells make between themselves, rather than just the number of brain cells. So just as in life, it's so much what you know, but well connected you are.
Hopefully during the mention of the Middle Brain you will have made the connection that this same brain layer is involved in both the emotions and in long term memory. This means that if you are experiencing strong emotions at the time you study you are either more or less likely to remember what you studied. if you are happy and positive during your learning, you are much more likely to retain the information (and less likely if you are unhappy). Others will have noticed that the Middle Brain is also related to your sexuality -- maybe that's how some disreputable university students still manage to turn in good grades?
Improving your learning
But back to the Thinking Brain, and one of the exciting things about this brain is that it is like a muscle; the more you use it the stronger it gets. You can actually increase your intelligence by studying! Why is this? It's because during study your brain cells are making more and more connections (and remember I told you that your intelligence depends upon the number of connections between cells), and if you can make the learning experience an enjoyable one then you are more likely to retain and recall what you studied.
The Thinking Brain is in two halves and it is generally accepted that the left side is the logical half, and the right side is the creative half, and we don't use them equally -- each person will have a preference of left (logical) or right (creative, intuitive) in different proportions.
When you are listening to a piece of music for example, your left Thinking Brain will be focusing on the words, your Right Thinking Brain will be involved in the melody, your Middle Brain will experience the music at an emotional level and your Brain Stem can even regulate your heartbeat and breathing to suit. In fact, if you tap your feet in time, then just about your whole body is involved in a musical experience.
Accelerated learning is concerned with enjoyment and using the whole brain and your body too, because there is some evidence to suggest that not all thinking occurs in the brain, but other parts of the body are involved too.
Accelerated learning covers a wide spectrum, but at its extreme it's about becoming more childlike in the learning process. Remember what it was like when you first started school? Bright colors, music, dancing, all the things that stimulate the whole mind and body. Many times children (and adults) are taught through song. Remember how the whole brain is involved in music? Well teaching by way of songs is so easy to absorb; can you remember the number of days in the months without the song?
Accelerated Learning Instructors
Today's accelerated learning instructors are quite different from the old image of the teacher or lecturer; instead they are collaborators and facilitators who encourage enjoyable interaction between students and their learning, and are immersed in the teaching process along with the students.
Your brain has been designed for accomplishment, engineered for success and endowed with the seeds of greatness. You are the master of your own intellectual destiny; and you can design your own intelligence. Using your brain properly, especially in innovative and fun ways, accelerates your learning, increases your intelligence, your understanding, your memory and recall, and your enjoyment of life.
