Acid reflux can happen anytime, more especially when you are full, lying down, bending, or sleeping. But what is acid reflux, anyway?



Acid reflux is a serious health problem that occurs when stomach contents containing pepsin abnormally reflux back to the esophagus, which cause irritation. If left untreated, it will take a very long time before the esophagus completely heals. Worse, it will develop into ulcer and some form of cancer.

There are many ways to avoid acid reflux. Food, for example, should be paid attention to because the food and drinks you take in affect how often you experience acid reflux attacks.

Food is one of the causes why there are millions who get acid reflux. There are food which cause the lower esophagus sphincter to open, a part which is as the passageway between the esophagus and the stomach. This is where the food you eat travels through before they are broken down. So what are the food to exclude from your diet?

Generally, the food groups you should not consume are food rich in fat. Fat is the worst digestive stimulant. It settles in the stomach for too long because it is hard to be broken down. Therefore, it adds extra pressure on the LES, weakening it more and paving way for the stomach acids. Other kinds of food you should exclude are citrus, chocolate, tea, coffee, tomato-based food, spices like onions, junk food and alcohol.

On the other hand, only include in your daily diet the food which are safe for you. They are food low in fat, vegetables, apples, bananas, fiber-rich food, beans, and food high in carbohydrates like wheat, graham crackers and bread.

So when you are home, inform your family that you suffer from acid reflux and you should not eat food that are not right for you. This way they will assist you in preventing acid reflux attacks through what you eat. This is evident when one of your family members buys and cooks the food for the family. By letting your family know what's good and bad for your acid reflux diet, they will only prepare heartburn-free meals for you and choose only the food that are all right to eat.

To know more heartburn-free recipes, the internet is a library where you can get yourhands on thousands of them. There are sites out there which offer free heartburn-free recipes, and there are also recipe books out there that are available online.

To really prevent the food which worsen acid reflux at home, post a list of them on your refrigerator, for example. This way you have a daily reminder to be careful with food.

It is more difficult when you are in restaurants. This is because you have no knowledge of the ingredients used in the food they serve. If you are not sure about a food item they have and how it is prepared, ask. If you know by heart what you should not eat, you'll be fine.

You should keep a food journal where you write which of the food had probably triggered your acid reflux in case you had one for the day, and of course, all the things you had ate for the day.

1. Caffeinated drinks-soda, coffee, and hot/cold chocolate drinks.

2. Peppermint & Spearmint-both as drinks such as tea, and in gum, and other foods as flavoring.

3. Citrus-this would mean both drinks, like orange juice, and foods as in lemons and limes.

4. Spicy foods -raw onions, cinnamon, red and other hot peppers.

5. Chocolate-flavors and candy bars

6. Alcohol-in medicine as well as in food

7. Tomatoes- in drinks as well as in foods

8. Fried and fatty foods-this would include most fast food and junk foods.

While most of these foods are causes of heartburn, it must be stressed that it might be possible that there are other foods that cause heartburn in addition to or instead of these foods. So the best acid reflux food plan is an individually created one that meets that individual's needs.

What foods to include

In general, the foods to include are the ones that do not cause the symptoms. In addition, you need to be sure to get a well-balanced and enjoyable meal while still living without the others. Remember that vitamin C is required in other forms than orange juice and the citrus foods that are restricted. In this case, a supplement might be necessary in this case if other foods are not found.

Grains such as whole-wheat flour, oats and others will be needed to aid in the digestive process. In addition there are several digestive enzymes available and it is advisable to take one before bed at night. One good plan is to go through your cupboard, pantry, and refrigerator and remove all offending acid reflux food. Then go back again and see what menus can be made with the items you have left. Shopping is made easier with a list of foods that do not cause heartburn. You might also look for foods from restaurant menus and try to find new foods to order while eating out. While creating an acid reflux food plan may at first sound difficult, actually it is quite simple. You must find what foods are causing the problem and eliminate them. In addition, you need to determine what foods remain and learn to both create new recipes and recreate old ones from the dishes that you enjoyed in the past.
