When it comes to defining the types of acne, it can be broadly classified into two main categories. The problem with this kind of classification is that there exists far more sub categories under these two broad heads. We would try to have a look at all the common acne types and would try to give you an idea of the distinction that exists amongst all these types. We would not be going into exactly medical terminologies but would try to make it understandable for common mortals like us.
The most common acne type is Acne Vulgaris. The name itself means “common acne." Most of the acne that you look at is of this type. Acne Vulgaris may result in blackheads, whiteheads, pustules, nodules, papules and cysts. We would try to have a cursory glance at all these types.
The occurrence of blackheads is seen in partially blocked pores. Sebum, dead cells an bacterial all drift to the surface of the skin. The skin pigment gets exposed to the air turning it into black color. This is what is called a blackhead. If you have ever been the recipient of blackheads, you would know that it takes time to get rid of blackheads.
Similarly, whiteheads are formed at the site of completely blocked pores that blocks sebum, dead cells, and bacteria under the skin surface. So, whiteheads are found beneath the surface of the skin.
Then you have pustules. The ones that you called pimple are these little villains. They are manifested as red circle with a white or yellow center.
The small red projection on your skin that so much irritates you is nothing but papules. Papules are tender and irritating and the best way to aggravate this type of acne is by irritating them by touching and squeezing. That is sure to cause scarring on your face.
If it is a nodule, you are sure to be in a lot of trouble. This type of acne is much larger than other forms. These appear as big bumps under the skin surface. It is painful as well as long lasting. Most of the times this type of acne result in scarring and thus you would do well to get it checked by a dermatologist.
And the main difference between a nodule and a cyst is that to make things worse, these also contain pus. In most likelihood these can also lead to scarring and as such you are well advised to consult a dermatologist.
Then you have a very rare form of Acne Vulgaris, Acne Conglobata. This is a very severe form of acne and cause severe disfigurement. This might also result in psychological as well as physical pain. This acne type is characterized by large lesions on the face, chest, back, buttocks, thighs, and upper arms. This generally causes permanent scarring due to rise of numerous blackheads. The situation might persist for years if untreated and as such it is imperative that a dermatologist is seen.
Another type of acne is the Acne Rosacea. The important characteristic of this acne type is that the effect is seen only in people over thirty years of age. It is characterized by red rashes on the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin. This acne type requires medical care otherwise might turn very severe.
Thus, we have had a look at some of the acne types. This was just to add to your information about acne.
