Acupuncture Lower Back Pain

    View:
What is the most prevalent reason for people to seek medical care from a professional? It isn't the common cold, which everybody just ends up buying over the counter medication for. No, that condition that forces even the most reluctant to seek medical care is actually lower back pain. That's right, millions of working days ? and, thus, millions of dollars in potential revenues ? go down the drain with each day that is lost every year by the average person. All of that due to the power of pain.

One major cause of lower back pain would be sprains, or the overstretching of one or more of the ligaments lingering about in the spinal area. Strains, which are damage done to the muscle ? such as a rip or tear ? by sudden force, has also been known to cause back pain. Injuries, improper lifting positions, and poor posture are all possible causes for something like that to happen. Of course, these aren't the only reasons that the back might suffer from chronic pain. Herniated discs budding out of their proper places between two of the vertebra can also cause back pain. If the structural strength of the bones in the spine are compromised, the result can also generate chronic pain in various affected areas of the spine.

One way to help alleviate the problems caused by lower back pain would be acupuncture, one of the many branches of the expansive Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) system. The manner that a true, trained TCM practitioner would see back pain varies greatly from how Western medicine would define it. One view is that it might be caused by some sort of deficiency in the elements and nutrients needed by the body. Another is the stagnation of the blood and Qi. Qi, according to TCM, is the energy of life that is in constant flow within all living beings, and around all living beings. Any disruption to the flow of the blood or Qi, or if something causes them to stagnate, then it can cause problems ranging from colds to lower back pain. Finally, there is also something called Cold Damp Obstruction with might cause the pain, which is characterized by sensitivity of the pain to weather conditions.

Pain caused by deficiencies are usually dull, but chronic. According to TCM principles, it can be common in the middle aged and elderly, and that it generally improves with rest after treatment. Stagnation causing lower back pain, however, is much more difficult. Rest can be detrimental, as it is believed to worsen the stagnation. The stabbing nature of the pain often accompanies sprains and strains, and has been known to reoccur over one's lifetime. Finally, obstruction pain is often worse during mornings, and can be made worse by cold and damp weather. Heat can improve it, but not always. Numbness, swelling and heaviness often accompany this sort of pain.

Acupuncture, according to TCM practitioners, can be used to successfully aid anyone with any of these types of chronic pain. However, that is only true if the treatment applied is genuine and the person doing it is trained in the correct methods. Otherwise, the negative effects can either range from not doing anything to causing more damage.

Acupuncture for Back Pain

The use of the ancient Chinese medical treatment known as acupuncture is ideal for the treatment of pain of all kinds. It is in the management of pain that Western Medicine and acupuncture seem the most compatible. There is still a slight difference in the feelings about just why the treatment is so successful, but little disagreement about the results. One of the best indications of this is the fact that at an American Medical Center that specializes in the treatment of chronic pain, it is reported that insurance pays for as much as 70% of the treatments.

Western Medicine has certainly been taking acupuncture seriously in recent years. They have concluded that the insertion of needles at various points in the body tends to release endorphins and opiods. These are both the body's natural pain killers. It is also thought that certain immune system cells and neurotransmitters are released in the brain. Elevated glucose levels and increased levels of other bloodstream chemicals can be observed after acupuncture treatments.

Back pain is a good example of the type of chronic pain conditions that respond well to acupuncture. Although the back is a complex structure and there is much potential for physical damage that can be measured and defined, much back pain is very unspecific and therefore hard to treat by conventional means. Acupuncture theory usually associates pain with blockage. There is a saying in acupuncture lore that informs us that when there is ?no blockage, there is no pain.? This concept of blockage can be in the normal flow of qi, or vital energy through the Meridians of the Body, or it can sometimes be the blockage of heat and blood to certain organs.

The acupuncture treatment will release the blockage and restore a flow of energy. This in turn will alleviate the pain. Pain is almost always a signal from the body that something is amiss. The use of chemical pain killers would be seen by the acupuncture practitioner as not unlike fighting a fire by turning off the fire alarm. The pain killers merely mask the pain for a time without addressing the message the body is trying to relate. Acupuncture seeks to relieve the pain by dealing with the underlying problem.

Acupuncture treatments for back pain are safe and they are non-addictive. The treatments themselves are not painful, although many who are new to acupuncture fear that the pain of the needles would be worse than the pain that they are trying to relieve. The truth is that most patients report a feeling of well being during the actual treatments and in some cases almost immediate diminishing of the pain. Usually, a series of treatments will be required before the condition is relieved. Most acupuncture treatments for any ailment will include herbal supplements and lifestyle changes such as diet or exercise. This is because the acupuncture treatment is geared toward treating the whole patient rather than the specific ailment. It is an inexpensive alternative. Even its most vehement skeptics admit that it works although they are not sure how. Acupuncture is throwing off its inaccurate label of mumbo jumbo in the West and is worth serious consideration for a number of common ailments. Back pain is one of these.
