Aftercare In The Addiction Treatment Program In Nebraska

    View:
The aftercare provided after an addiction treatment program in Nebraska is more important than the treatment itself. This is quite easily understood. The treatment that is meted out when a person checks in with an addiction problem is a onetime treatment. More than anything, it is a detoxification process in which the body of the person is cleansed from the accumulated toxins that aggregate due to the long years of the addiction. This is what the treatment is all about. However, for complete recovery from addiction, this is certainly not enough.

The point that has to be remembered here is that addiction is not a bodily problem; it lies in the mind. The reason why a person would want to use the substance over and over again is because a registered feeling in his or her mind prompts him to take it. The urge is created by the brain. Drugs like methamphetamine and heroin can directly control the central nervous system of the person and create a recurrent urge within it. Complete recovery from addiction, therefore, should mean curing this temptation that the person has for the substance in question and not just removing the physical dependency.

Aftercare becomes quite important in the addiction treatment program in Nebraska because this is the part of the treatment where the person is taught to come over the craving for the substance. This is the part of the treatment where the person's mind is trained to exercise control over whatever temptation he or she has for the substance and then slowly eliminate it from the system entirely.

In order to provide the aftercare treatment in the right manner, several techniques are employed in the addiction treatment program in Nebraska. Several agencies come forward for this part of the treatment. The primary in these are the treatment centers themselves. The treatment centers will have an aftercare plan once the patient is out of the detoxification treatment. The second agency will be the intervention program that the patient's family, friends, employers or educational institutions used to get them into treatment in the first place. Once the detoxification of the patient is coming to an end, the intervention program will spring up into action once again and formulate an elaborate aftercare plan of the patient to take care of the patient's addiction recovery for the long term.

Finally, the family of the patient will also use certain techniques for keeping the patient out of a re-addiction. However, the family will usually act only under the guidance of the treatment center and a professional intervention program if there is one. It won't act out of its own volition, and its role will be mostly monitoring and supervising the patient's recovery during this vulnerable period of his or her life.

Let us take a look at some of the professional means employed during the aftercare program of the patient to ensure that they come back into complete recovery.

1.The patient will be kept up on a maintenance medication through the treatment center in which the detoxification was carried out. Most forms of addiction treatment have medications that help people control their urges for the substance. These medications are supposed to be taken for a long period of time even after the main inpatient treatment is over, because if they are stopped abruptly, they can cause withdrawals of their own. A good example here is methadone that is used in the treatment of heroin addiction in Nebraska. Hence, it is important to continue the medication for several weeks after the detox is completed to ensure that the person does have an immediate urge for the substance.

2.The nature of the patient's condition and the manner in which the patient progressed through the treatment will determine whether the patient will be kept into an outpatient of a residential format of aftercare treatment. This will, in turn, dictate the length of the overall aftercare treatment program.

3.Considering it is an outpatient format of treatment, a counseling program will be kept up, where the patient will need to visit the treatment center once or twice a week. In the residential aftercare, counseling could be a daily process. Here the patient is taught of ways and means in which they can fight the temptation for the substance.

4.The patient is taught techniques such as Yoga, massage, relaxation and breathing exercises and such others. These help the patient to keep away from the substance and fight temptations.

5.They are trained on becoming socially active once again and take up hobbies and other such ways to keep meaningfully distracted. They may also be counseled on how they can take up a job.

6.The families of the patients are counseled on how they can cope with the condition and help the patient in their relapse prevention program.
