Don't buy into the hype. You don't always have to spend more money to find quality, especially when it comes to replacement parts for your car. Sure, manufacturers tell you to buy original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts for your vehicle to ensure safety and performance, but did you know these manufacturers don't even make their own parts?
That's right. They use outside independent companies to design their parts, and after a certain amount of time, they sell these parts to wholesale distributors for resale, which are known as OEM parts. It's a similar situation with aftermarket parts ? which simply means the product is made by a company other than the original manufacturer of the car.
Aftermarket companies buy the rights to reproduce certain car parts and supply them to the same wholesale distributors that are selling the OEM parts. In many cases, an aftermarket company may even find a way to improve the parts, resulting in an even better quality product than the OEM.
Additionally, aftermarket parts are produced with the same machinery and materials as OEM and genuine parts, and they perform just as well as the originals. While the parts may have minor differences in the look and feel, they basically perform the same function. The only real difference is the price ? and it's a big difference!
So why pay more for an OEM part when you can buy aftermarket for more than 70 percent less? Since aftermarket manufacturers don't have the same costs as original manufacturers, such as research, development, advertising or even special packaging, they can sell parts at a reduced rate, and the customer benefits.
SAFETY CONCERNS
While aftermarket parts may have come under scrutiny, and their safety quality has come into question in the past, there is no need for concern, according to The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which conducts crash tests.
In February 2000, the company conducted a study on a 1997 Toyota Camry where the original-equipment hood was replaced with a certified hood from an aftermarket supplier. The study compared this crash test with a similar test using a 1997 Camry with the original-equipment parts. IIHS reported that "both Camry's performed with distinction in 40 mph frontal offset impacts," and both earned good crashworthiness ratings according to the Institute's evaluation procedures.
In fact, Brian O'Neill, president of IIHS said in the report, "Claims are made that using cosmetic parts from sources other than original equipment manufacturers could compromise safety. But these claims are red herrings to try to frighten people?there are no safety implications of using cosmetic crash parts from any source."
However, it is important to note that many aftermarket parts are specifically designed to fit certain model cars and certain years for each model, so make sure you order parts that match your vehicles make, model and year.
But don't pay more for OEM, when you can get the same or better quality for so much less.
Aftermarket Performance Auto Parts
Any vehicle can be upgraded with performance auto parts, and what parts you use will largely be dependant on what type of vehicle you drive and exactly what results you are looking for. Everyone has their own opinion as to what constitutes the best and greatest performance parts, so you will need to do some research into the subject to make up your own mind.
There has been an increase in demand for performance auto parts and the industry has ballooned in answer to this. Some companies specialize to attract particular clientele, like hot-rods, and others are general performance parts suppliers. Enthusiasts are looking for different parts, based on their interests - hot rod enthusiasts will be looking for totally different performance parts to monster truck guys. There is something for every vehicle, whether it be styling accessories or systems for increased power or handling.
The range of performance auto parts is wide, and so are the brand names. Again, everyone has their own opinion and favorite brands. Ask around and talk to lots of people about what brand is best for what type of gear. Personal testimonials are the best form of advertising; try and talk to people who are making similar modifications as you.
One of the top four performance parts would have to be the air filter. Conventional air filters clog up quickly and have to be replaced many times in the life of the vehicle. A high performance air filter will give you increased air flow which in turn will give you more power and better economy. You can also get a reusable air filter, which you can wash and reuse; you get the improved air flow and you don't add to pollution in landfills.
Spark plugs are another part that can reduce vehicle performance by giving incomplete fuel combustion. High performance spark plugs give you maximum power as well as better fuel efficiency. NGK have been making spark plugs since the 1930s are most enthusiasts will only use this brand.
High performance exhaust systems use a "catalyst-back" system, known as a cat-back, which frees up torque and increases horsepower. The cat-back exhaust system consists of wider exhaust pipes with low-restriction mufflers to lessen the back pressure. You will love the great noise they make too.
A cold air intake unit will lower the temperature of incoming air to increase the power of the engine. One of these will look really good in your engine bay as they are interesting and colorful. New cars are equipped with computer chips that make complicated calculations regarding torque and horsepower. You can upgrade the current chip in your car, or you could buy a new high performance chip, to improve the available horsepower.
Pricing in the performance auto parts industry varies significantly, and you are best advised to shop around for the best prices on the leading brands. Of course, if you are able to do the work yourself, your costs are further decreased. Fortunately, these performance enhancements should not impact your vehicle's fuel economy.
