Here comes, haunting the future, the famous Metabolic Syndrome.



Arterial hypertension, low HDL-cholesterol, diabetes, high triglycerides and fat in the abdomen, are the “fatal fifth”.

Loosing weight is the first step to acquire metabolic balance. It is known that loosing just about 5 to 10% of the ideal value we can already benefit the individual controlling of the cholesterol, triglycerides, diabetes, and hypertension. Before starting any drugs treatment, it is imperative to improve diet to control the weight and also arterial pressure, diabetes, triglycerides and the cholesterol.

Another important point to manage this syndrome is regular and moderate intensity of physical activity. It is scientificaly proven that exercise’s benefits controlling the hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol and triglycerides.

As soon as you control the cholesterol, triglycerides, diabetes, the hypertension and lose some kilos, less time you will suffer the risk factors effects and less will be the possibility of developing atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a disease in the blood vessels, more accurately, in the arteries.

As we become older the wall of the arteries become harder, with less elasticity. This process progress with the age, and has different evolution from one person to another one. Although genetic predisposition is important, the presence of arterial hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, and high triglycerides accelerates this process. The most dangerous diseases are the cardiovascular ones, mostly caused by atherosclerosis, they are acute myocardial infarction, cerebral vascular stroke and cardiac insufficiency. Therefore the adequate control of the hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol and triglycerides, associate with a weight loss is very important for Life’s Quality in the future.

It is important to have in mind that today we can calculate individual risk factors. Obesity, arterial hypertension, cholesterol, triglycerides and diabetes, increase the chance of having any cardiovascular event. We also know that in each region of the world they have a different value. However, most important of everything is that these factors when they are associated, they multiply the possibility to occur an event. Thus, in Brazil, who smokes has 4,9 times more risk to present myocardial infarction, who has diabetes has 2,8, who is fat 2,5, who has familiar history 2,3, high cholesterol 2.1, and arterial hypertension 2,1. Also very important is that the factors when associated do not add the risk, but they multiply it, we calculate that a diabetic individual, with high cholesterol that needs to loose 20 kilos, presents 2,8 X 2.1 X 2,5 = 14,7 times more possibility to have a myocardial infarction than someone without these risk factors. The life´s quality in the future depends on attitudes taken in the present time. Therefore, to move away atherosclerosis it is necessary to control the hypertension, the cholesterol, triglycerides, diabetes and loose weight.

It is a constant fight against pleasures and comfort of modernity. Balance is needed to use modernity benefits and to move away from its curses. Therefore, a healthful diet and the weight control are the first step to achieve this balance and to move away the Metabolic Syndrome ghost.
