Through a central ad server, various relevant banner ads are uploaded on a particular website. Usually, the banner advertisements selected by loaded into a web browser, commonly referred to as an impression, are those that have are similar in content with the website being visited. For example, if the webpage being viewed by a visitor is a web article about how to prepare and properly plan a family vacation, the banner advertisements that would be posted may be that of online travel agencies offering vacation packages.

While some online businesses have begun to utilize other methods of online advertisements, banner advertising remains to be one of the most effective for a number of reasons. As a result, they are able to lower their advertisement costs.

Finally, banner advertisements do not require a huge bandwidth to be viewed, even if it is an animated banner ad. Oftentimes, the banner advertisement displays faster than the entire content of the webpage being viewed, giving these advertisements a bigger chance to be viewed and attract potential consumers or clients.
