Fashion trends evolve all the time. In recent years, a lot of people have been taking to donning what is called streetwear, a quite stylish interpretation of street graffiti and even gangster life. How this rough and tumble environment has become the influence for the clothing preference of high-class fashionistas is very remarkable, and looking into its development as a fashion style is really quite worthwhile.
The origins of streetwear took place in the late 70s when people were very aware of and involved with social and political issues. This was also the time when punk rock was starting to develop, further encouraging the general feeling of independence and a need for social reform among the young people of the time.
During that time, the punk rock style of music was starting to branch into the hiphop and rap culture. It just so happened that most of the fans of this music style were surfers and skaters, and influences of their music could be seen on their surfboards and their t-shirts. One of the pioneers of this type of streetwear was actually a surfer from Laguna Beach, California, who was already quite well-known during the time, named Shawn Stussy. Together with his rise to fame, the popularity of this style grew as well. Today, his signature is still considered to be one of the best brands of streetwear all over the world.
Although the first proponents of streetwear were mostly California surfers, it was not long before the rest of the population would start getting interested in the graffiti inspired Stussy creations. In fact, by the middle of the decade, many other companies had already started their own brands targeting not only the surfer market but skaters as well. Soon, these two styles would merge, resulting in the kind of streetwear that is still very much in fashion these days.
Following the rapid spread of streetwear popularity in the United States, young people from other countries immediately became interested in this new style of clothing as well, especially the youth of Japan. Because of this, Japanese clothing manufacturers began designing their own versions of streetwear, coming up with apparel infused with anime and other trademarks of the Japanese pop culture. Young people embraced this fashion style with fervor, usually even adding their own unique accessories for an added touch of uniqueness to their outfits.
During the start of the 90s, Europe was the only continent that had not yet been captured by the streetwear trend, but that was soon to change. By the middle of the decade, the style had completely taken over, with manufacturers based in several countries all over the world. Big companies began to dominate the scene, eclipsing the market of smaller and lesser known manufacturers.
Despite the wide availability of these mass-manufactured streetwear, many people were and are still attracted to the novelty of customized and totally unique outfits produced by smaller companies. There are a few exceptional commercial brands that do stand out from the rest, but few would contest the better quality and originality commonly associated with apparel produced by smaller manufacturers.
Streetwear is now available in most malls and has actually become more of a mainstream fashion. However, there are still several brands that cater to the more elite crowd such as Addict, Supremebeing, Fly53 and WESC. Most of these companies have also expanded to also producing streetwear accessories like bags and sunglasses.
When streetwear was first conceptualized, most of the clothing was designed for men. In recent years, most brands have introduced more feminine outfits, some even daring to produce evening dresses and business suits that have the unmistakable trademark of urban life. With everyone going gaga over this style of clothing, there is no doubt that streetwear will be around for many years to come.
All Day Love Affair
From being a typical student and partying too hard with the resultant monumental hangover and trying to recover on the steps of Sacre-Coeur. Spending time in quiet reflection at such locations as the ?Jeu de Paume.? Moving from impressionism to surrealism and coming to terms with the wildly different styles.
Life comes in all forms shapes and sizes in Paris. Like a great many other places France does have its socioeconomic issues to confront and like other places they cope too. You can find it quite easy to forget about the worries and strains of everyday life in certain parts of Paris.
Paris possibly with Rome is the ultimate juxtaposition of the old and the new. You have this modern day world capital and economic and social in pot-pourri living together side by side and somehow managing to get on together.
Nowhere is the old and the new married so successfully than in the architecture and physical structure of Paris. Just down the street from Elegance and Splendour you have buildings covered in bullet marks and fading plaster that obviously haven't been looked at since 1945.
Yet stop and ask the typical Parisian why this is and certainly with regards to the fading plasterwork and bookmarks and like the madrilenos asked about some of Madrid's fading glory they are just as likely to shrug their shoulders and indicate that there are actually more important issues in the world.
They may well be right and I am not about to try to disabuse them of this notion.
Returning to the subject in hand of why I like Paris.
While it's quite simple because Paris actually caters for everyone and achieves this without giving the impression of trying that hard. For those amongst us with a love of the more ?High Brow? there are some of the worlds finest museums and art galleries while the rest of us can while away the hours looking at some of the most beautiful architecture in the world or relaxing in some of the most beautiful urban parkland found anywhere
From the mighty splendour of the ?Musee de Louvre? (the world's largest museum everyone please note) to some of the more obscure but no less worthy museums such as the ?Musee Carnavalet?, and the ?Musee National du Moyen-Age?, Paris has something for everyone. Relax and chill in some of the most beautiful parkland in the world such as ?Le Jardin du Luxembourg? or ?Le Garden des Tuileries? whilst your art loving partners browse the world famous artefacts of the Louvre!
For the religiously inclined amongst us there is the awesome splendour of Notre Dame and for the sheer natural view of Paris there is always the steps of Sacre Coeur in Montmartre which is where we came in if I am not too mistaken.
