Orthodontic care refers to the movement of teeth. This dental specialty deals with problems of malocclusion (ill fitting teeth), problems with the temporalmandibular joint (TMJ), and cosmetic tooth correction.



Modern orthodontic treatment includes phase one care (the placement of removable appliances in patients age 6 through 12). This interceptive treatment is designed to take advantage of the rapid growth during this time and help correct the form and function of the dentition. This care can shorten and lessen the period required for the child to be in standard braces.

The introduction of the INVISALIGN tray system has revolutionized the care in adult patients. This system relies upon a series of trays to move the teeth and because no wires or brackets are used, patient acceptance has been excellent.

In patients with severe skeletal alignment problems, orthodontic treatment, in combination with surgery, may be required to achieve the best functional and cosmetic results.

Periodontics is the dental specialty that treats disease of the gums and surrounding bone. Standard periodontal care is arranged in phases.

Phase 1 Care includes examination and diagnosis of periodontal disease followed by root planing and soft tissue curettage. Many times this phase will utilize microbial testing and antimicrobial care... This care includes systemic antibiotics as well as antibacterial irrigation of the periodontium.

Phase 2 Care includes the reevaluation of the patient to determine the best course of care for the patient. This includes either placement on a maintenance program (cleanings every 3-4 months) versus periodontal surgical intervention.

Modern periodontal surgery includes surgery of the bone and soft tissues surrounding the teeth, soft tissue grafting, and bone grafting procedures to repair defects and placement of dental implants.

The continued maintenance of the periodontal tissues is critical to prevent the return of this disease process.

Endodontics is the dental specialty which treats infections and disease of the pulp of the tooth.

Modern endodontics relies upon microscopic removal of diseased tissue, shaping of the internal anatomy of the tooth and placement of inert sealants into the root canal... Because of advances in endodontics, most patients can retain teeth that would otherwise need to be removed.

A second area of endodontics, surgical endodontics, allows for treatment of the infected tooth when the standard approach is not possible.

Following endodontic care, most teeth will need a crown to help strengthen the tooth.
