The way basketball is played today is not the same at the time of its invention. The mastermind behind this beautiful game was a Canadian YMCA International Training School instructor named Dr. James Naismith. He invented this sport in the year 1891 as a way to keep his students occupied and keep them physically fit during the long winter months.



Officially, the first basketball game was played in 1892 and since then this sport has evolved and changed in a number of ways. Dr. James Naismith devised a set of thirteen rules for basketball, some of which are still used as basic rules today.
