The game of backgammon is over five thousand years old and is played by many people. It is a game of skill and is not that difficult to learn. The points aren't usually numbered on the board so you have to learn them. The board points are numbered from right to left beginning on the bottom. The one point is in the lower right corner, on your home board. The 2 point is next to it. Your opponent's 24 point is opposite your one points, his 23 point is opposite your 2 point, etc. There is a bar down the middle that divides the board into two halves, the outer board and the inner or home board. The side in front of you is your home and outer board. The other side is your opponent's home and outer board.

To set up the board to play, each player lines up his men with 2 checkers on the one point, three checkers on the 8 point, and five checkers on the 6 point and 12 point. The two men on the one point are called runners. Players roll one die to determine who goes first. The player with the highest role plays first. Players roll the dice so the dice land flat in his own home board side. Suppose the player rolls a 3 and a 5. This means that he can move one man eight spaces or he can move one man three spaces and a second man five spaces. A space is equal to a point. If he rolls doubles on the dice, he then has a total of four moves. If he rolls a 5 and 5, he can move four men five spaces each. A player makes a point when he moves two or more men onto the point. Once a point is owned, the other player cannot land on it or touch it while moving his own man.

Once a player acquires six consecutive points, he has made a Prime. This means that if a man of the opposing player is trapped behind the prime, the opponent cannot move that man past the prime. A Blot occurs when there is one man on a point. A blot is hit when the opponent moves men onto it or touches it while moving. When a blot is hit, the man is removed and placed on the bar. The player has to re-enter his man from his opponent's home board and cannot make a move until he has re-entered the man. He re-enters by rolling the die and moving to a point that is not owned. A Closed Board exists when a player makes all six points in his home board. That means the other player can't re-enter because all of the points are occupied. He has to wait until a point is vacant in order to re-enter. Another thing to remember, a player must move the required number of spaces if he can. If he can't move the number on each die, then he must move the number on the highest die. If not, then he must move the number on the lowest die.

Following these rules, players move their men around to their own home board. Once a player has done this, then he can begin to bear off his men. Remember, the object of the game is to be the first to bear off all fifteen men. There are rules that must be observed in bearing off. A player cannot bear off his men when he has a player on the bar on one or more outside his home board. Bearing off is done according to the number on the dice. A player moves his man the required number of spaces. The player does not have to roll the exact number to remove a man. If he rolls a five when his man is on the 3 point, he can use that five to bear off the man from his 3 point. This is where strategy comes into play. Which man do you bear off first when you have a choice?

The first player to bear off all of his fifteen men wins the game. A Gammon or double game win occurs when all fifteen men are borne off before the opponent bears off the first of his men. If the opponent still has men in your home board and you've cleared all fifteen of your men, then the win is a triple game win or backgammon.

In addition to a pair of dice for each player, there is also a doubling cube. The doubling cube has powers of two on each side, 2,4,8,16,32 and 64. The doubling cube allows players to double the stakes at any time during the game. A player who thinks he is in a good position turns the cube to 2. If the other player doesn't accept the challenge, he forfeits the game. If he accepts, he owns the cube at two and can now double further when he wants to. The game is now played at two units until he challenges his opponent with a double. That player loses two units and forfeits the game if he declines or if he accepts, the game is played at four units and he now owns the cube for the next challenge.

Even though the game seems confusing at the beginning, after a little play the player will catch on and begin to enjoy the game.
