Speed reading has in the past been thought of as a way to get a leg up on the competition. In today's competitive business world you may need to go one step further as more and more people have realized the importance of this skill in maintaining their marketability and competitive edge within current job markets. Being competitive is more important now than ever before as far as the professional 'white collar' job market goes.

I'm a bit skeptical of the idea of simply reading a list of suggestions in order to improve your reading comprehension as well as your reading speed.

If you have a local group that meets in order to 'compete' or offer that little bit of competitive edge as far as speed reading goes, this is an excellent motivator for those that need a little push or friendly competition in order to really get into the swing of things. Having some degree of accountability whether to yourself or others always seems to help and offer that extra little nudge to do things faster the next time. It's easier to compete with others however, than it is to compete with yourself so group events are a great way to encourage you to display marked improvements in your speed reading abilities.

Keep in mind that if one method doesn't seem to be working for you, you should try another rather than giving up all together. No two brains are alike and it sometimes takes a bit of trial and error before you find that one way of putting things that resonates within you and makes sense. The gift of speed reading is a great gift to give yourself so don't give up or give in too easily.
