Imagine doing a search on Google for "web hosting company", and coming up with around 1,700,000 hits! How can you possibly find the best web hosting plan for your needs among all those? You may look at the prices, thinking: "I will get a good deal by looking for the cheapest web hosting plan".
Well, not a good idea IMHO. Because of the fierce competition between providers of web hosting services, they often try to cut costs by cutting down on support, and also by vastly overselling hardware and bandwidth resources. The result: poor support and poor reliability. Simply put: your website goes down, and nobody listens to you when you try to tell your hosting company about it.
What you want and need is not a cheap web hosting plan, but a good web hosting plan that fits your budget. Having realized this, you start looking around for advice on good web hosting. Now, chances are you will then stumble upon some web hosting review site, which is happy to tell you that xyz.com is the very best web hosting provider in the world! Fine, you think, now my problem is solved thanks to that piece of valuable information.
Wrong again - most likely. The truth is, that many web hosting companies pay very generous commissions to those who refer new customers to them. It then becomes very tempting to set up a "web hosting reviews" website which is actually nothing but a billboard for the best-paying web hosting services providers, with no regard for their actual merits. And so it goes. I have personally looked over about a hundred of those web hosting reviews' sites, and in most cases they are just that - billboards. Often, they strongly recommend web hosting companies that are actually known to have a very poor customer reputation. Thus, they are really spreading misinformation and confusion instead of offering good advice.
The only reliable way of telling if a web hosting company is worth doing business with, is to see what their customers are saying about it. Such customer posts can be found here and there on various web sites, but you have to know where to look. A few of those web hosting reviews' sites does actually collect and post such customer opinions; and you can also find authentic posts by searching on large web hosting forums such as WebHostingTalk.
Needless to say, you should NOT bother with the "customer opinions" posted by the web hosting companies themselves on their own sites. Often, those "reviews" are fabricated, or simply copied from somewhere else.
It took me a while before I realized these things, it was not until I took the time to sift through hundreds of posts from web hosting customers that I finally noticed a pattern. Now I want to share this knowledge with others, to give them a better web hosting experience.
Best Web Hosting Reviews
Economically you should prefer a cheap web hosting company. But cheap is not always good. But then high costing hosting service is not always good either. The best way to figure out the best company is to research the reviews of web hosting companies from genuine clients.
The best place to look for web hosting reviews is the open, public forums. Everyone is free to express himself/herself there which also include the web hosting customers. The posted review stays on the forum unedited for viewing by the third parties.
Forums also some setbacks, such as business owners writing good reviews for their own company or business competitors writing negative reviews about competitors, but these are rare cases and if there are any doubts regarding the reliability of the reviewer, the forum participants can ask for explanations. Bottom line is that the public forums are a valuable tool for finding out the reputation of a certain hosting company.
Not all reviews are the same. Some are more valuable than others. Some maybe more detailed while some maybe basic. It is also significant who writes the review. If a single reviewer has a large number of posts in the forum the defiantly you can give more credit to his words and if the profile shows a website URL then there is no need to worry.
WebHostingTalk, HostHideout etc are few of the good web hosting forums as they are more populated. DMOZ - hosting category will help you in figuring out more web hosting chats and forums.
How do you search for a review of a particular XYZHosting company?
Step 1: Go to the Search page of that forum and type the name of the company i.e XYZHosting in the appropriate field. Also look for results you will get for XYZ Hosting(with space between XYZ and Hosting). Then hit the search button.
Step 2: If the results are unsatisfactory then create a new thread and ask for customer reviews on that company. You can only ask for reviews by getting yourself registered on that company.
The best way of asking for reviews will be to choose maximum 2 or 3 companies and ask for their reviews. You get better results if you concentrate on just a few companies. Also specify that you're looking for customer reviews to prevent people from posting "I heard that they're good/bad" stuff.
Step 3: Select 2 or 3 companies on already existing customer reviews. You can choose any one of them. In this case you can afford to go for the one that is cheaper in comparison to others.
Another note of caution: Reading those threads can be a very time consuming task. It can sometimes take you more than 4 hours to read all the threads about a single company. If you decide not to use my list of "very good" web hosting companies, be prepared to spend a lot of time searching and reading on those forums.
Do not pay the company for the whole year in advance. Pay monthly so if you don’t like the services you can always discontinue. This will however work for companies offering free one month trial. Also remember that no hosting company will have only happy customers. So don't fret if you find an occasional negative review or opinion.
So with all the above guidelines we hope you will find out a suitable hosting company for your requirements.
