Bird watching has a lot going for it when it comes to doing it as a family event. It is done outdoors, so everyone gets a bit of fresh air and some exercise. It is also inexpensive since you basically need binoculars and a journal to record your sightings. Most importantly, it provides you with a lot of time together to talk and laugh.

It is fairly amazing that we do not hear more about hand injuries with kids. The rate at which they play video games and pound those buttons is pretty amazing. I will avoid jumping into the debate on the content of video games, but what is clear is kids need to get out more instead of sitting in front of the television or computer.

As a parent you probably agree with this notion. You, however, are no off the hook. While kids may be spending endless hours playing video games, parents are equally busy. From working to running errands, weekends hardly seem like days off anymore. Heck, it is hard to find time to sit down together as a family just to have dinner.

Bird watching solves all of these problems nicely. Bird watching is a hobby, not a sport. This means there is a lot of time to just be together. You might see a lot of birds, but you might not. While fanatical birders would blanch at the thought, bird watching with your kids is not really about seeing birds. It is about being with your kids, talking to them and just spending time together. This means you need to leave the cell phone and blackberry at home.

Finding time together can be difficult these days. Take your kids out bird watching and you will have carved out your own slice of the week to just be a family. If you see some birds or get hooked on birding, all the better.

Binoculars are the most indispensable tools for bird watching thus is very important that you get your kid reliable bird watching binoculars. Now, you do not really have to buy your kid one of those top of the line binoculars that can cost you a fortune, there are plenty of binoculars that are very reliable but do not cost much. Note that children do not really need those high powered binoculars just to watch birds so forget about those high end products and focus your attention on those binoculars that are easy to use.

When choosing bird watching binoculars for your child, pay close attention to the size, the weight and the features of the binoculars. Always remember that you child has small hands thus he or she may have some problems grasping large binoculars. Moreover, your child has smaller face compared to adults so buying adult size binoculars is not a good idea. To find the right size of bird watching binoculars for your kid, bring your kid along when you go shopping for bird watching binoculars and let your kid test the binoculars before you buy it. If the store allows it, let your child play with the binoculars for a while to give him/her a feel of it. Ask your child to test other binoculars and compare them.

When asking your kid to test the binoculars, ask you kid if he or she is comfortable with the weight. Note that kids love to bring their binoculars along with them all the time so it is important that they are comfortable with its weight. If your kid thinks that the binocular is too heavy, ask the salesclerk for a lighter type of bird watching binocular. Furthermore, check the straps of the binoculars before buying it. Make sure that the straps are softly padded and will not bite into the neck of your child. You don't really want to your child to end up with chapped skin after wearing the binoculars around his or her neck for sometime.
