Going through the history, we come we come across examples of dealing with illnesses with the prevailing procedures and medical techniques. The advent of modern medicines has been beneficial in treating patients without causing torment in the form of leeching, venting which were done during ancient era. Hence the medicines which have proved beneficial should not be misused by either deliberately taking an overdose or getting hooked to the prescribed drugs.
Why There Is Addiction to Prescribed Drugs
The addiction to prescribed drugs occurs more from the lack of endurance of the present generation. In their quest to get instant result and inability to tolerate pain, they keep on taking drugs so as to get momentary relief. Ultimately they develop tolerance to the drug dosage. This tolerance to dosage is the primary symptom which every patient addicted to the prescribed drug faces. Hence the next dose of medicine to be taken is increased both in terms of frequency and strength to obtain the relief. This type of dependence on drugs may land the patient into serious consequences including death.
The physical dependence occurs when the person requires certain amounts of the drug to function normally. The physical dependence to the prescribed drug has increased manifold because of the negligence on the part of people by not seeking the help of medical personnel while taking any drug. Also they do not care for personal health till adverse symptoms like vertigo, mood swings etc show up. We should remember that the medical personnel follow a protocol of the dosage of medicines. The self prescription is a dangerous habit and can cause irreversible damage.
Drug- an Easy escape from Pain
Some people having disabilities as a consequence of trauma are dependant on pain killers like morphine to reduce the symptoms of pain. But in the long run they become incapacitated due to the dependence on the painkillers. Also individuals ailing from depression, sleeplessness etc. take tranquilizers to relieve their anxiety and get sleep. They overlook the long term adverse reactions of such medicines. The withdrawal symptoms are difficult to handle in such cases as the prolonged use makes the person comfortable with the drug and their body resists the reduction in dosage.
It requires lot of determination on the part of patients to fight the pain and discomfort while quitting from the habit of addiction to prescribed drugs. The medical help should be sought to manage the withdrawal symptoms as they require hospitalization.
Books About Drug Addiction
The problem of drug addiction and alcoholism are escalating and spreading to levels totally out of control. But is enough being done? Are people actually aware of the real dangers and damage that alcohol and drugs can cause?
So let me provide you with a few addiction and alcoholism facts and statistics - so you can really begin to appreciate the potential for damage and devastation that alcohol and drugs have.
1) More than 50% of all fatal road accidents involve alcohol
2) Use of alcohol and drugs is one of the leading causes of death and injury in young adults.
3) Violent behaviour attributed to the use of alcohol accounts for around 50% of murders and rapes.
4) Around 90% of street muggings and property theft are made by addicts to support their addiction.
5) Approximately 20 million people over the age of 12 use drugs in the US and around 20,000 people die each year from their addiction
I've just briefly mentioned a few drug and alcohol related facts and statistics - but the message is hopefully loud and clear. So I just don't get how we still live in a binge drinking culture where alcohol abuse is glamorised and regarded as cool/socially acceptable. You could half understand it if it were just teenagers going on about their drinking exploits - but adults are even worse. I just don't think the message of the dangers and damage that alcohol can cause gets through to enough people.
And why isn't more being done to eliminate the drug dealers, who take advantage of the vulnerable and young in our communities? It's just plain cowardice targeting youngsters, especially because they are the most vulnerable, with drugs like heroin.
My fear is - I just don't see how things are going to get better - because there is a limit to what we can do. Prevention is the only cure, but that is never realistically going to happen in large enough numbers, so mindsets need to change and become aware of the damage and pain alcohol can cause - and a way urgently has to be found to get more drugs off our streets.
And the addiction and alcoholism statistics I've shared with you will no doubt be constantly changing and on the increase because the problem of substance and alcohol abuse is only getting worse. So we need to each do our bit and spread the word to the dangers and damage that alcohol abuse and drugs cause. There are just too many lives at stake ...
