You were initially very pleased with your results as you were steadily losing 1 or 2 pounds per week until suddenly, you begin to notice that your weight loss is getting slower and slower until it grinds to a screeching stop and no matter what you do, the number on your weighing scale refuses to go down. What happened, you wondered in exasperation.
Well, this phenomenon quite a common phenomenon for people who are trying hard to lose weight and yes, you have hit the dreaded "Weight Loss Plateau".
So how can you overcome the weight loss plateau? In order to overcome weight loss plateau, you need to understand why you are at this stage. The answer is actually rather simple.
I believe that you probably know that in order to lose weight, you have to consume less calories than what you burn for energy. So if you were losing weight effectively before and now your weight simply refused to go down anymore, that could mean only one thing and that is that you are longer on a caloric deficit situation, meaning you are no longer burning more calories than you consume. Yes, you can say that you are still eating the same thing and amount of food as when you were losing weight steadily. However, I can tell you this is exactly the problem lie and here are the reasons why.
You see, if your diet requires you to curb calories and since you wanted to get faster result, you cut down your calorie consumption more than what was recommended, your body adapts to this drastic caloric deficit by decreasing your metabolic rate known as "starvation mode" or "adaptive thermogenesis" in the weight loss the industry.
Your body's adaptation is actually a natural survival instinct because your body instinctively reacts as though you are starving and thus is conserving your body fat to keep you alive.
Now, you may not be aware that as you were losing weight, you were getting smaller and therefore you need lesser calories than before when you had a bigger body frame. As this being the case, if you are eating as much as before when you were bigger, then you are now consuming more calories than you are burning. So how can you lose weight if you are eating more calories than that which you are burning? Common sense isn't it? The problem is that most people do not realize this implication or even thought about it this way.
Since now that you have a smaller and lighter body frame, your body will burn lesser calories when you are moving about or when you are exercising. This means that you have to tweak your exercises to burn more calories, don't you agree?
These are commonly overlooked reasons why you often hear people say that it is most difficult to lose that last 10 pounds or so. It is not difficult at all, it is just that they have overlooked these not so obvious but simple facts. So the answer as to why you have hit the weight loss plateau is that you no longer in a caloric deficit state, simple as that.
So how do you overcome a weight loss plateau? For starters, you can get started by giving your body a break. Take a week or two off your program since your body has adapted to it. This is also to give your body a physiological break from the stress of dieting and exercising. It is also time to let your body reset some of those starvation hormones and start stimulating your metabolism again. So when it is time to get back to the state of calorie deficit after your much needed rest, your body will be responsive to your efforts again. Good news isn't it?
So that when you return to your weight loss routine, tweak it to reflect the current state that you are in and watch your body fat melt away again.
Break Weight Loss Plateau
But first, if you've been beating yourself up over this, the time to stop is now. These 3 factors are easy to miss, because they are not simply about exercising more, or about eating less. Exercising more and eating less do NOT work for about 97% of people struggling with a plateau.
By the way, I speak from experience, since I was once in your shoes. I congratulate you for pressing onward? most people would have already called it quits.
So, here we go?
***HIDDEN KEY #1: The Subconscious Influence***
Surprisingly, the most commonly missed reason behind so many weight-loss plateaus is not one about fat grams or metabolism- it's the experience of an ?emotional plateau.?
An ?emotional plateau? is something that happens when you grow tired of the weight-loss process. And it's quite understandable. After all, losing weight does require a lot of effort.
When you're on an emotional plateau, your motivation is not as high as it once was. Subconsciously you allow yourself to relax a bit, snacking a few extra forkfuls here, and a few extra nibbles there.
Now, if you're saying, "You're wrong, I don't do that!", let me reiterate that this is something done on a subconscious level. You may not even realize it, and it occurs slowly.
In the end, those extra calories add up. Combined with the fact that your body has grown accustomed to your new metabolism, your weight-loss progress stalls.
An emotional plateau often occurs after you've already lost a significant amount of weight. The urgency of weight-loss is not as high as it was in the beginning.
The solution? You've GOT to take an honest look, and ask yourself if you're being as disciplined as you were on the day you began your weight-loss journey. If you do not keep a food diary, do so now for 3 days, recording every bite you eat. You may be surprised by what you find.
***HIDDEN KEY #2: The Fat Myth***
Another hidden reason behind many plateaus is a FEAR of eating too much healthy fat, such as nuts and olive oil, and the subsequent lack of healthy fat in the diet.
Most dieters eat very small quantities of healthy fat, such as ? of an avocado for one serving. However, research shows that healthy fats, especially coconut, peanuts, almonds and avocados, actually raise metabolism, and can help speed your weight-loss process.
Even though healthy fats are high in calories, your body utilizes them in a highly efficient manner. As long as you maintain an exercise program, your body will NOT convert healthy fats to the type of fat you're trying to shed. Plus, healthy fats will help to satisfy your hunger, and will reduce food cravings.
The solution? Increase your intake of healthy fats. Add nuts to salads, spread avocado on your sandwiches, and crack open a fresh coconut.
***HIDDEN KEY #3: So Much For Strawberries***
The third hidden reason behind many plateaus is consuming the wrong foods, specifically fruits, vegetables and grains. The key here is FIBER, but there's a twist.
Fiber helps you lose weight faster because it's filling and it keeps your system moving. But the twist is, while you may think you're making the best high-fiber weight-loss food choices, you're actually not. In fact, it's a mistake made by 99% of dieters.
For example, while strawberries are certainly healthy, they are a less effective weight-loss choice than apples, because strawberries are quite low in fiber. Romaine lettuce salads are a dieter's favorite, but lettuce is low in fiber as well. The labels on whole wheat products can be tricky to read... you may not be getting real whole wheat at all.
The result? You're not losing weight as fast as you should be, considering all of the produce you're eating.
The solution? You must investigate, and be certain that you're selecting fruits, vegetables and grains that are the highest in fiber. Your top choices will have 7 or more fiber grams per serving.
