The earliest switchplates were wooden, huge, protruding, clumsy, and plain ugly. On them sat big, fat, black switches. And don’t even get me started on what the wiring did to the aesthetics of the room. But switchplates (as well as switches and wiring) have evolved over the years, to the extent that they can actually look elegant. They are now available in a variety of different designs, shapes, and sizes.
What are switchplates? For the uninitiated, switchplates are the plates that cover light switches and outlets; their basic function is to hide and protect the wires around outlets and switches.
Customizing: So, who would consider the humble switchplate worthy of customizing? If you haven’t tried it, you are missing an opportunity of having a brighter and more creative room.
Thematic Customization: Can switchplates be customized according to the theme of your room? You bet! Firstly, there are a number of base materials to choose from – plastic and brass, among others. Secondly, there is a huge range of colors and shades to choose from. Sizes? Yes, you can choose from a number of sizes.
What effect do you want? Now, you may want the switchplate to blend in with the room, or you may want it to create a dramatic impact. For the former, choose a switchplate color that is similar to your wall color, and for the latter option, choose a color that contrasts with your wall color.
If neither of these options is for you, spend some thinking about how you want your switchplate to compliment the theme of your room, and choose accordingly. For a little girl’s bedroom, for instance, you may consider a switchplate that combines baby pink and white – the classic baby girl colors.
Cleaning: Some of us hesitate to clean switchplates, since we perceive them to be fragile. However, in order to get the best visual impact, and to keep them looking new in the long run, it is important that we clean these switchplates regularly.
Shock Value: If you are concerned about getting shocked (which is hardly likely), switch off the mains before you start with your switchboard-cleaning project. Next, use of a mild dish detergent and water along with a soft cloth to gently clean the switchplates.
Using decorative switchplates is a smart and easy way to brighten up your room and add character to it. Remember to look around before you purchase your set!
Brighten Up A Room
There are many ways in which you can brighten up your home and changing the flooring is one of them. You do not have to do anything too drastic – you just need to change slight things such as maybe adding a rug or putting down some carpet. Both can add a warm and homely touch to the house and they really can make a big difference to the way the room looks.
Do You Have to Cover The Floors?
It is not essential for you to cover your floors and even if you do place carpet or a rug down, you do not have to cover the whole floor. These days the modern look is wooden flooring and carpet or a rug can be added to give a little warmth and color to the room.
Wooden flooring can get extremely cold, especially in the winter. So by adding a rug it does actually add a slight bit of warmth to the room. Also it is a good idea to have a rug if your room looks a little bare. Laminate and other wooden flooring can look really nice, but sometimes it can give the impression that the room is slightly bare and that it needs livening up a little. So, by adding rug or carpet it can close the room in and make it look more inviting.
Should You Choose Carpet or a Rug?
Both carpets and rugs can add a different look to a room so how do you know which one to choose? Well a rug generally can be placed in front of a door or as a centre piece in the middle of the room. It does not generally take up as much space as carpet but it all depends upon the size of the rug that you choose.
Rugs come in a variety of different styles and oriental rugs are particularly common as they have quite a lot of color to them. They are easier to manage and you can just put them straight down onto the floor without much hassle.
Carpets on the other hand are usually fairly big, though you can cut them to make them smaller. An example of using carpet instead of a rug could be when you place it in front of the door. It could stop dirty footprints from being brought into the house and it can also keep some heat inside, especially when it is placed behind an outside door.
So overall rugs are easier to manage and to clean, but carpets can really help to add more warmth and they can be comfortable to walk on too. No matter what you are choosing you need to make sure that you select the right color scheme for the room. Also think about the room that you are placing the carpet or rug in. Generally it is not a good idea to place a rug or carpet in the bathroom as it is not hygienic. It is better to get a bath mat though a small rug could be placed next to the bath so that water does not go everywhere once you step out of it.
Wooden flooring does look great on its own but sometimes adding a rug or carpet can help to add color, warmth and a point of focus to the room.
