This list is generally made up of different people that have asked to receive some sort of information from them, either in the form of an email newsletter or some other general publication.
There are quite a few top Internet marketers that say that most of their income comes from sending out marketing emails to the people that are on their list, taking that into consideration, it seems as though the list can be the marketer's real key to success.
There is a myth though that goes something along the line of, the bigger the list, the more money and success it will bring. I say it's a myth because there are loads of ways to build lists, for instance you can buy them, run some competitions or contests or even swap them with other list owners, but doing it those ways, although you can generate large lists, will not guarantee that you will be successful with them.
Getting to know your target audience is a big key in creating a great list. What you need to aim for is quality targeted people for your list, you will be a lot better off with say a list of 2000 people who are interested in what you have to say, rather than a list of 20,000 people who are really not all that interested.
An example can be, if you are selling an e-book on say how to lose 10lbs in 14 days, you don't want to be advertising to build your list on a pet food site.
You will also have to pay attention to how easy you have made your signing up process, if you make it too hard to do, most of the visitors that you might normally get, could possibly just click away from your page because they find your process too complicated.
Make sure you have got your sign up box in an easy to find place on your page, for instance, don't stick it three quarters or all the way down at the bottom of the page, because if your visitor decides that they are not interested in reading all that you have on the page, they might click away before they even find out you have a sign up box.
I have found that the top right hand side of the page works best for me, you can try that for starters and see how you get on, another good idea would be to split test where you put it and take it from there.
A great way to build your list is to offer something for free in exchange for someone joining your mailing list, say an e-book or maybe some software like video inviter, try to make sure that it is of good value though and not some old plr or similar product that thousands of people are touting around.
Remember it may take a little time for you to develop your list, but it will be worth it, because once you have it, it will be one of your best and lucrative assets.
