Building A Collection Of Swords

    View:
Collectors of swords quickly find that well made swords and authentic antique swords are quite valuable, but they do require care and maintenance to keep them attractive and valuable. Collectors also enjoy collecting the protective leather or metal scabbards that soldiers carried them in, which were attached to their waist.

During times of war, a knight would consider his sword to be the most important weapon he had, then as time progressed weapons were changed. Soldiers began attaching bayonets to their rifles or they would use daggers and knives, which has a much shorter blade than a sword. Of course, these were much less effective weapons because the reach was much smaller. Swords were primarily used as weapons for cutting, striking, slashing, and thrusting which made their long blades excellent for. In fact, their blades were long enough for a man on horseback to be able to swoop in and cut down any soldier on foot.

Swords can be either a long single edged blade or a double edged blade and will have a hilt, pommel, grip, and some contain a hand guard or a shield. These have been used as weapon in wars throughout the world in a variety of cultures, and they have been made of bronze, iron, steel, and even tempered steel. Swords come in a variety of designs which include traditional such as sabers, rapiers, cutlasses, and scimitars. These magnificent swords signify tradition and prestige from the past. In fact, a knight was dubbed a knight by being touched on the shoulder with the flat part of the sword by a lord or a monarch.

Although swords are no longer used as weapons in war, they are still used during ceremonial events, because in military type weddings they play an important role and during certain military rituals. They are also part of elite commissioned officer's dress uniforms. The majority of ceremonial swords seen today are made of gold or sterling silver with their blades having elaborate inscriptions or engravings.

Historical swords cover a range of swords that date back as far as two thousand BC and are inspired by stories of chivalry, which surrounds medieval swords to long swords to fencing swords that have become popular with collectors. When collecting historical swords it is important to be sure you are purchasing an actual antique and not a replica, which have been produced with a high level of skill and might still prove to be a valuable addition to your collection. Fantasy swords do not necessary have anything to do with history, in fact, they are designed from imagination and will often feature dragons or other animals.

Collectors need to store their collection of swords in display cases where the humidity can be controlled, unless the collector lives in an area that has a high humidity and in this case swords could be mounted on the wall. Collectors should take precautions to prevent their swords from rusting, which includes not allowing anyone to directly touch the blades because skin oils will eat away at the metal on the swords. If your swords are handled, then be sure to carefully and completely wipe your sword off, which will prevent your sword from rusting, plus this will prevent any type of moisture from reaching the blade as well.
