Building A Privacy Fence

    View:
As more and more subdivisions are being constructed you will notice that houses are being built closer and closer together. This lack of space leads to less and less privacy. A solution to this problem is installing a privacy fence. The following are a few tips on how to approach erecting your own privacy fence.

First you will need to check your neighborhood ordinances. They should be explained in the neighborhood's by-laws. Your particular neighborhood may not recognize development regulations, so you will have some freedom of choice.

Depending on your local government ordinances, you may need to obtain a building permit. Some local governments require obtaining a permit if the fence is over a certain height. Refer to your county's Department of Buildings and Codes Division for information and assistance on obtaining the necessary permit. If your fence does not meet local jurisdiction, you may be charged a fine.

You will also need to locate your exact property line. If your property deed is not handy, you can obtain the necessary information from your county's Register of Deeds Office. You may want to erect a fence 6 to 12 inches inside the outer limit of your property line to be safe and ensure your fence is on your own property. You can be faced with fines and you may be forced to rebuild if your fence extends into a neighbor's property line.

Now you can decide on the material of your fence. As stated earlier, you will have a variety to choose from if your neighborhood doesn't recognize development regulation. If you do not choose to build the fence yourself, you can choose from vinyl, aluminum, or wood fences that are packaged in panels for your convenience.

Once you decide on the fence material, you will need to choose a style and color that complements your home. The colors are usually muted so as not to distract. Fence styles range from lower picket fences (starting 3 feet in height) to a complete privacy fence (6 feet in height).

Decide why you are building the fence. If you are trying to add ambiance you may want to consider a picket fence. If you want privacy, then you will want to buy a closed-in style. If you have a pool or hot tub, a privacy fence with a secured gate will probably suit your needs. There are a myriad of fencing options available to suit everyone's needs no matter what your situation or lifestyle.

If you feel confident be sure to obtain the proper tools, including a posthole digger to insure depth. You will also need to decide if you want the fence set in concrete or in the soil. If you are not comfortable with erecting your own fence, seek the aide of a reputable contractor. But remember that most pre-made fences are easy to install and are within the correct specifications to suit any need.

Fences are easy to maintain, generally need little, if any, upkeep, have a great visual appeal, and will secure your privacy.
Building A Privacy Fence

A privacy fence is a nice way to keep out unwanted eyes from your yard or home. These are generally solid fences that are fairly high so people can not easily peer over them. Families who have small children who often play in the backyard sometimes use privacy fences. Also, people who have pools or hot tubs often want to use a privacy fence in order to keep people from looking in on the activities occurring in the backyard. Anyone who wants an added bit of security will want to have a privacy fence installed if there is not one already there.

A privacy fence can be very decorative. It can be made from a variety of materials and depending on the area you want blocked off you can make it an industrial look or a very homey look. Whatever your personal style and taste is, there is a type of privacy fence available to you. Some people choose to not even use a traditional fence for privacy but instead use shrubs or trees. They will line the area with close fitting tall shrubs or trees. This is very nice because it lends an attractive look to the landscape. For people who have gardens, hot tubs or pools, this option may be particularly appealing. The downside to this type of privacy fence is that it will need much more maintenance to care for and trim the shrubs or trees so they stay attractive.

Privacy fences can be made of wood also. These are usually treated wood that is approximately eight feet tall. A decorative topper can also be added. Because the privacy fence is typically solid, it can look a little plain especially if it is being used around a home. You will want to make it a little more attractive while maintaining the functional use for it as well. A decorative lattice work on the top will help achieve that. A privacy fence can also be made of other materials including chain link and vinyl. For a chain link fence, slats are woven among the links to create a solid wall.
