The coastline on the eastern side of Mallorca is fairly rugged with lots of small coves, so it is unusual to find such a lovely stretch of fine white sand on this part of the island. Cala Millor's beach, which is around 1.5km long, is situated within a sheltered bay between two rocky headlands. Sun loungers and parasols are available for hire, and there is an excellent choice of water sports, including windsurfing, paragliding and water-skiing.
Alongside the beach is a promenade that leads northwards to neighbouring Cala Bona. A traditional fishing village, Cala Bona is notable for its excellent seafood restaurants and open-air cafes. There are also three artificial beaches which provide safe bathing for younger children. The promenade between Cala Millor and Cala Bona is flat making it ideal for cyclists.
There are regular glass-bottom boat trips from the jetty at the northern end of the beach. The boats travel between Cala Rajada and Porto Cristo, stopping at Cala Bona, Sa Coma and S'illot. Usually the captain will stop on the way to allow passengers to enjoy a refreshing swim.
In the centre of Cala Millor are the attractive gardens of the Parc de la Mar. The Fantasy Park play area for children, complete with inflatables and various rides is located next to the gardens. Cala Millor also has a go-karting track on the Avenida Bahia de Llevant to the west of the Parc de la Mar. There are several popular tourist attractions within easy reach of the resort, most notably the Mallorca Aquarium and famous Drac Caves in Porto Cristo. The latter is a series of huge caverns with millions of sharp, coloured stalactites. The caves also contain one of the largest underground lakes in the world.
Cala Millor hosts various events throughout the year, including the International Regatta in October. Hot Air balloons from across Europe and the United States participate in this colourful spectacle. The last week of September sees the annual Tourism Week featuring various parades, concerts and competitions. One of the more traditional events in Cala Millor is the fiesta de Sant Antoni Abad on January 17th, which celebrates the patron saint of animals.
Cala Millor is situated around 38 miles (60km) from the island's capital, Palma de Mallorca, and 12 miles (20km) from the town of Manacor. There are regular buses from Cala Millor to Palma, Manacor and along the coast to Cala Bona, Sa Coma and Porto Cristo. During the week there also are special market day services to Arta (Tuesdays), Sineu (Wednesdays), Inca (Thursdays) and Son Severa (Fridays).
Cala Millor has two tourist offices; one at the northern end of the promenade, the other next to the Parc de la Mar. Both provide the latest information about activities and events in the resort.
Cala Millor All Inclusive
The modern resort of Cala Millor which translates into English as the better bay is on the islands rugged east coast and is separated from its more quiet and traditional neighbour Cala Bona the good bay by a small rocky headland.
Most of Majorcas east coast is dotted with tiny creeks and coves, however, the beach at Cala Millor stretches for more than 6km along a wide sheltered bay which is protected by two large unspoilt headlands. Cala Millor offers some of the finest beaches in Mallorca, and after you have finished your hard days sunbathing there is a host of activities in the town to keep you occupied in the evening, along with some of the finest restaurants in the area. The beach here is considered by many to be one of the best on the island, with clear water and gently sloping sands. Parasols and sun beds can be hired at various points along its length, along with the usual selection water sports activities, including a windsurfing school.
The resort has a good selection of shops, but in all fairness to the town, they do tend to lack any great variety in the range of products they each stock. If you do venture beyond your sun bed, local markets are held every Friday in nearby Son Servera, further a field to the north in Arta on a Tuesday, and 20km inland at Manacor every Monday. For those of you who have been to the island before you would recognise that Manacor is also the home of the Mallorcan Pearl industry.
Cala Millor is without doubt the livelier and has a wide selection of bars and discos providing evening entertainment to supplement that provided by the hotels. Although Cala Millor has a quite a wide appeal, it is still perhaps more suited towards the traditional family holiday than those 18 to 30s who are possibly looking for all night clubs and karaoke bars. Most of the British Bars offer night time entertainment like quizzes, bingo, race nights, karaoke, plus live entertainers.
Public transport along all of the east coast is limited so it may be worthwhile considering car hire, especially if you want to visit the nearby Caves of Drach and so avoiding the Tour Operators day trip charges. For those visitors who consider public transport an adventure and not a challenge, the local bus operator Aumasa does actually run a service over to Alcudia on the north west coast of the island, and even over to Soller, which is deep in the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range. Over the years many visitors to Majorca have asked us for information on the bus timetables, although our general advice is the sit and wait, and enjoy the sun, Aumasa do actually publish what they claim to be the timetable their buses run to but luck is what is needed.
