Cars By Gas Mileage

    View:
In this day and age, the rising gas prices have drivers scrambling for any way to save money and lessen the blow to their finances. Did you know there are plenty of ways to improve your gas mileage by simply driving better and keeping your car in the best condition possible? By stretching the miles your gas allows you to travel, you will soon see a difference in your monthly expenses in gas. Below you will find a collection of tips to enhance your driving and car performance:

1) To gain more miles for your money, you should consider improving the way you approach traveling on the road. This especially comes in handy when you are looking forward to long or frequent trips. Planning a trip in advance helps to avoid the stop-and-go traffic of a congested road, which damages gas mileage. Checking traffic reports helps drivers select the best routes.

2) Save gas by lowering your use of the air conditioner. A trick to staying cooler in the car is to park your vehicle in the shade. Once you get into the car, opening the windows for a couple of minutes allows any trapped hot air to escape. If you travel at a higher speed or on the highway, it is suggested to close your windows.

3) Properly inflated tires help to save money and also avoid uneven and premature wear-and-tear. To determine the appropriate tire pressure, you should consult the owner's manual or scan tire sidewalls. Wheel alignment is also important, as improper aligning causes early tire wear. It is recommended to check the alignment about every 10,000 miles. The balancing of tires also helps to avoid a vibrating steering wheel and unnecessary car shaking. Rotating tires also extends the life of tires.

4) Filling your car and trunk with unnecessary items makes the vehicle heavier, meaning you will burn more gas.

5) When stuck in non-moving traffic, it is suggested to turn your car off rather than let it run idle.

6) At stoplights, avoid the temptation to rev up your engine - instead - slowly accelerate as you leave an intersection.

7) Refer to the manufacturer to determine the proper grade of gas to use.

8) Consider alternate forms of transportation, such as joining a car pool.

9) Using cruise control or maintaining constant speeds helps save gas.

10) Drivers should make it a habit to avoid sudden or unnecessary braking, which wastes gas.

Fuel economy decreases by as much as 10% when drivers have misaligned wheels, worn wheel bearings and brakes that drag. Dirty filters, damaged spark plugs, missed oil changes and emission-control system concerns also reduces fuel economy. Overall, following basic maintenance care for your car helps to lessen the amount of gas you need to use while driving. Routine maintenance intervals are often suggested for every 3,000, 15,000, 30,000, 45,000 and 60,000 miles on a car.
Cars By Gas Mileage
There are many ways to increase gas mileage and save money on fuel. Don't overlook your shopping trips into town as a way to combine trips or errands. Take into account all the errands you need to run and do some trip planning and find the shortest routes possible that have the least amount of stops this can be done with online mapping services saving money, time and fuel.

Consider online services that post gasoline prices in your area or the routes you travel. Let these services find the lowest gas prices for you instead of wasting time and money driving around town looking for the lowest prices. Incorporate your stop at the pump with your trip planning.

Instead of driving around town when shopping for products looking for the lowest price do your searching online. Consider having your purchases shipped to your door. Most major retailers or merchants offer their products online and offer a larger variety and sometimes a discount or free shipping. Not only will you save time and money driving to pick up the item but you are more likely to purchase something that matched your expectations.

Who ever thought air could save gas? Well if your tires are inflated properly you could see your fuel efficiency increase 3%. Tires that are not properly inflated also wear much quicker. Consider having your tires also rotated every 10,000 miles. Inflated tires will save money on fuel and tires give you a safer and more comfortable ride.

Refer to your owners manual to get recommendations on when your oil should be changed. Oil that goes beyond its service life could cost you in a few ways. Keeping your oil changed as recommended can give you an increase in gas mileage of 1-2%. If it is discovered during an oil change that you have a dirty oil filter consider changing it and you could possibly see a 10% increase in gas mileage.

Have your vehicle tuned up as recommended by your owners manual. If it is running rough or your gas mileage is not what it once was it may be time to have a tuneup. It is not unusual to even have an engine that is running fine to see an increase in gas mileage due to a tuneup. A perfect example is a faulty oxygen sensor that once replace could increase gas mileage as much as 40%.

While driving always give your vehicle some distance from the one your following. Let your vehicle coast to a natural stop while minimizing brake use. Let wind resistance reduce your speed. When accelerating no need to gun it. Set your cruise control to improve gas mileage. Not only will these methods save gas but will save you money by reducing wear and tear on your engine, brakes and transmission.

Will you be purchasing a more fuel efficient vehicle soon because you want to get rid of a gas guzzler or just looking for ways to improve gas mileage? Compare miles per gallon or MPG. Be wary of a vehicle that needs premium gas compared to one that needs regular. If an automobile manufacturer recommends premium chances are the vehicle needs it and running it on regular could reduce engine life. Try to stick to regular or ethanol ready engines. Always research the vehicle you plan on buying.
