There are many different causes of snoring, but the most common one is tongue interference. This happens when the tongue is in the way of the back of the throat, interfering with airflow from the mouth to the lungs. As the tongue vibrates against the back of the throat, it causes and annoying and loud vibration. If this is the cause of your snoring, there are many different ways to go about fixing it. The first thing to try is rolling over onto your side. When you do this, your tongue moves around with your body, away from the back of your throat and to the side of your mouth. While this may result in a pool of drool on your pillow when you wake up, at least you'll be sleeping soundly enough to be drooling in the first place.



Other causes of snoring have different remedies, but since the tongue factor is so prevalent, I'll discuss it a bit more. Another thing you can try is a specially designed pillow that will reposition your head and neck in such a way that your tongue will be away from the back of your throat. Easily obtained online, these pillows cost around $50 and work like a charm for most people. Still, if your tongue continues to get in the way, you may need to see your dentist. Your dentist can refer you to a specialist who will custom fit you for a mandibular advancement splint. These devices gently push your lower jaw forward and encourage your tongue to come forward as well. But buyer beware: these things can cost upward of $3,000.

Some of the other common causes of snoring include obesity and smoking. Any doctor will tell you that it's best for your health to maintain a normal weight and never smoke, but few will tell you that both can have a drastic impact on snoring.
