Causes Of Upper Back Pain

    View:
There are a number of reasons why you might have pain in the upper area of your back including:

* Poor posture

* Injury

* Sitting most of the day

* Obesity

* Poor Diet

And while upper back pain can be a very uncomfortable condition, there are a number of options in treatment that can put you back on the road to being pain-free once again. Many of the causes of upper back pain include a lack of strength and conditioning or repetitive motions.

So if you are experiencing pain you should consult a physician and a personal trainer for the proper exercises to strengthen your back. Also cut down on your sugar intake as sugar only increases any pain or discomfort that you may be experiencing.

There are also injuries that can occur to the upper back from performing a sport or getting in a car accident. No matter what the reason is for your upper back pain, there are a number of options in treatment plans available.

Some can be effectively done at home and others will require the help of your doctor. Most people find that home remedies are usually the first course of action, and if these don't bring relief for your pain, your doctor can offer additional therapy options to you.

Home Remedies

To treat upper back pain at home, the first course of action is often to apply ice to the affected area. This can be done every three or four hours, and should be repeated for the first day or two after the injury occurs.

After the first couple of days, you can switch to a heating pad a number of times each day to bring relief from the pain. Another good home remedy for upper back pain is to use an over the counter pain reliever, preferably one with anti-inflammatory properties like ibuprofen or naproxen. You can also try a topical cream that contains capsaicin, but the jury is still out on whether these types of remedies are truly effective.

What Your Doctor Can Do

If home remedies don't bring the relief from your upper back pain that you are hoping for, your doctor has additional treatment options available. These can include prescription pain medicine that can work when over the counter options don't.

It might also mean a combination of medication and physical therapy that will strengthen the area and prevent future problems. Other types of treatment that might be recommended for upper back pain include chiropractic treatments, acupuncture or deep tissue massage. These treatments may require a referral to a different type of specialist that can offer assistance in these areas.

Upper back pain can be a difficult problem to live with, but the good news is that you don't have to live with it for long. By using effective home remedies or talking to your doctor about additional treatment options, you can say goodbye to your upper back pain for good.
Causes Of Upper Back Pain
Many people who suffer recurrent back pain say that fear is as big a problem as the pain. Their fear stems from the notion that the pain is a sign of permanent damage to the spine or a manifestation of a grave illness. In fact, recurrent back pain can have many different causes, and the overwhelming majority of people with this problem do not have a medically serious condition. That is, the pain is not a sign that something serious is wrong with the back. Nevertheless, the first step in managing your back pain is to rule out the possibility that it is caused by a serious medical problem such as a fracture, pinched nerve, tumor, or infection. Most people with back pain will have none of these signs. For them, the discomfort may come from any number or causes, which rarely involve progressive illness or harmful injury. Just about every part of the back - muscles, tendons, disks, ligaments, joints, and bones - can cause this type of pain.

The causes of recurrent back pain may be difficult to identify. In most cases, physicians cannot find any specific injury or condition in the muscles, joints, ligaments, or nerves of the back to explain the pain. Even if the onset of pain can be linked to an identifiable injury, why the pain recurs may remain unknown.

One theory is that recurrent back pain is caused by a vicious cycle that begins after an injury to the back. If you are in pain after an injury, you may hold your muscles tense, move in careful ways, or limit your movement and become inactive. These behaviors will cause your muscles and ligaments to shorten, resulting in more pain. Lack of activity may also weaken your back muscles, making them prone to fatigue and spasm. Chronic muscle tension and guarding can lead to a similar outcome. Or perhaps an initial injury causes a flare-up of pain, which triggers tension and more discomfort in the nearby muscle. Another explanation is that recurrent back pain is linked to the sensitization of nerves. After repeated episodes of pain or a single period of severe pain, a nerve may require less simulation than before to send a pain signal to the brain. Because so many factors can be involved, few back pain conditions are definitively diagnosed.

Even when the cause of back pain cannot be determined, as long as there are no red flag symptoms, the condition is not serious or dangerous. Whether pain is caused by tight muscles, weakness, nerve sensitization, or a bulging disk, it is time to focus on managing the serious problem of your pain rather than being concerned that it is a symptom of something worse.
