Ceiling Repair Water Damage

    View:
Water damage is nothing new and year after year you see floating cars and building top peeping just above the water level. The damage caused by the sudden water inflow is detrimental and added to this is the time and money wasted in renovating and rearranging the items after the water damage. Some of the damaged pieces can be rectified while a few of them are beyond repair.

Billions of dollars are lost every year to water damage and this can be controlled to a large extent by proper water disaster management tips and techniques. It is not just the torrential rains that cause water damage and there are lots of factors apart from the rain water seeping in to the basement. Even a minor broken pipe or overflowing sink is enough to spoil your day and annoy the proceedings. Other common causes that cause water damage are leaks in roof and walls, improper ventilation, increased level of humidity and slow water exit in the basement.

The things get worse when you are caught unaware and the walls and carpets get soaked in water even before you know what is happening. The house turns into a mess and it is really disturbing to clean the damaged the area without any further delay. Things become worse when people walk into your house and delve into the personal belongings.

Given below are few simple steps that help you to clean up the water damage on your own without any third party's assistance. This helps to prevent any further water damage and also you can take control immediately without waiting for some one to arrive and do things. Here is the list of things to do.

1. The first thing to do immediately is to switch off the main switch and this prevents any incidents of electrical shock. Do not ever get into the water clogged are without when the power is on.

2. Next step is to find out the nature of water and categorize it as clean, gray or black water and take the necessary steps accordingly. Clean water is not harmful and it comes from over flowing sink where as the grey and black water contain contaminants and this is not fit for consumption and cause problems if exposed to it.

3. Make sure that you have necessary tools, equipments and safety outfits like puncture resistant gloves, vacuum, deodorizers, carpet cleaning and disinfectants before getting into cleaning the affected area.

4. The water should be totally removed by using a wet or dry pump and water resistant pump to avoid any mold growth.

5. Once the floor is perfectly dry, the carpet must be cleaned properly to remove the debris and then treat it with disinfectants to control any bacterial growth. Then apply deodorize to maintain the freshness and make it feel and smell good even after the water damage.

6. There is no point in holding on to the padding below the carpet as it would be damaged by now.

7. This should be followed by treating the baseboards in disinfectants and then making air cavities in the damaged wall.

8. Check out for any visible damage in the furniture and other fixtures that are exposed to water and are liable to warp and peel out. Similarly also make sure that the metal items made of steel do not show any signs of corrosion.

9. Once the things are arranged and placed in order, the room has to be put under air dryer and dehumidifier to ensure that each and every single piece of item in the area is fully dry.

10. The last step is to value the damage with the help of an insurance agent and then raise a claim to cover up for the costs.
Ceiling Repair Water Damage
After the storm dies down, the flood subsides and you have returned home, it is time to deal with removing any water in the house, cleaning up, and drying everything that is wet. That carpet which was submerged in water is no longer safe to use and should be thrown out. Even more important than the furnishings is the actual structure, or building of your house. Your carpet or washing machine can easily be replaced but a home's structure, if water damaged, will require major changes.

Hidden water damage on structures

When you go around the house and start your inspection, here are some things that you should be on the lookout for. Some water damages can easily be seen by the eye, but there are damages that are not easily visible, and can cause water damage not to the structure alone, but also to other related systems in your home.

Look for wooden structural members that are cracked. These may not easily be seen, and structural bracing may not be as tight as it was before the flooding.

Doors and windows that do not open as easily as they did before the storm may be an indication that the structure has shifted. When severe shifting occurs, electrical circuits, gas lines, and water lines may have been damaged as well.

A flood or a leaking roof may cause wetness on the electrical circuit or insulation that is hidden in the interior of the structure. Once wall insulation becomes wet, it will not dry out and must be replaced.

If your home's structure uses a roof truss system, check for cracks or breaks in the truss. Truss systems are usually constructed of 2x4 metal fasteners. Any crack or break in the truss will affect the strength of the truss system and aside from causing water damage through leaks, your roof will no longer be safe.

How to check for structural damage

Check your roof. If there is any presence of structural damage, your roof would be a good indicator. The ridge of the roof should be straight, and you can view this from a distance. If there is any sagging on the ridge, the load-bearing walls may have shifted.

Check your walls. Walls should be vertical and straight. You can do this by looking at it, or by checking with the use of a carpenter's level.

Check in places where the structure meets the foundation. If structural water damage has occurred in your house, the building would shift on its foundation. If your house is on piers, carefully inspect each pier and make sure they are in place and are level. Wooden floors that have suffered water damage may buckle or push walls outward at the base. If you see any change, then you have structural damage.

Check the masonry exteriors of your house. Cracks due to structural water damage may occur near the corners of the structures, around or under doors and windows.

Restore or repair

Structural water damage is very difficult to deal with, and can be very expensive depending on the degree of the damage. Structural damage is not something you can postpone. This is often the first thing you have to deal with because the core of your building has been affected, making your house unsafe to live in.

The issue of whether to repair or restore, rebuild or remove is something that you will have to discuss with your contractor and insurance adjuster. There are ways to repair your home so that it will no longer be susceptible to flood and water damage. This is where the need for a professional comes in. Only a professional restoration service or contractor will be able to tell you the different options available to you, and which one would be the best and least expensive.
