During World War II exiled royalty from all over Europe took refuge here and gambled in the towns casino, which is one of the largest in Europe. Two of the best orthopaedic hospitals in Europe are situated in Estoril. It was a major centre of international espionage and secret diplomacy during the Second World War, and from that time onwards has retained a sophisticated, cosmopolitan atmosphere.

It is particularly well equipped for golfers. tennis has also put Estoril on the map, its annual Tennis Open in April having ensured that the local tennis club offers plenty of state of the art courts, which guests can enjoy.

Night life in Estoril is the famous casino, which not only caters for gamblers and slot machine addicts, but also offers a flashy cabaret show. When it comes to clubs and pubs, the options are better in nearby Cascais. The regions relaxed and cosmopolitan atmosphere goes on well into the night at the many nightclubs, bars and restaurants.

Shopping is limited in Estoril, mainly confined to mini-market grocers serving the locals with a few craft shops and vendors along the beachfront. Souvenirs are available, but for a real shopping spree visitors have to head for the large Cascais Shopping Centre a few miles away. Other than the upscale hotel boutiques that sell poolside accessories and scarves, Estoril does not abound with shopping options. Most dedicated consumers head for the markets of Lisbon or for the large scale shopping centre in Cascais, a ten minute drive from Estoril.

This important building downtown establishes a new centrality in Cascais. Seven cinemas, a supermarket and many shops. Restaurants are in the Third floor and offer a nice view over the sea.

Beaches on the Estoril Coast are known for their calm waters and fine sand. All modern facilities are available beach tents changing rooms, shades, restaurants and bars. The Estoril Coast is a great place to get in some sunbathing or swimming. The beaches, though slightly cooler than the Mediterranean ones along Cote d Azur, still lie in protected waters and remain fairly warm. Carcavelos is probably one of the most popular beaches in here, especially with surfers, as it is a long, wide beach with fine white sand. Right in front of the Casino Estoril, you will find the Tamariz beach, which is a hot tourist destination.
