Laptop computers were designed to be used on the go and therefore have batteries to power them. At least the laptops that came around in the last decade or so. Shut off your Wi-Fi connection unless you absolutely need it. Believe it or not using a Wi-Fi connection can actually take a lot of battery power. So unless you are near an outlet or using an outlet try not to use the Internet. However, it is understandable that some people this is not an option and they need the Internet constantly therefore there are more ways to increase battery life.

Make sure that you shut down and exit any programs that are not currently being used by the system or you personally. Unused programs that run in the background will take up more of the processor's memory and therefore making it run harder. When the process runs harder it will decrease your battery life.
