People put a lot of time and energy into dating. They are searching for that one true love. The future Mister or Missus. And invariably there are going to be a number of different people at one time who are looking for somebody. Some might be divorced. Some have children. Others are fresh out of school. Singles are quite lucky in how they go about meeting people. Those with kids or recently divorced aren't quite so fortunate. Singles could also put a personal ad in the local newspaper. For a small minute-to-minute fee, local singles can talk on the phone and get to know each other. Or they can meet somewhere. Of course, not everyone wants so much intimacy immediately. And for these people, online dating sites might be the answer. Singles dating sites abound where people can create an online profile without ever speaking to anyone. They simply fill out a questionnaire and their information is saved. Some sites offer a personality test. By taking this test, singles are matched up with others of like mind.

While local and Internet personals might appeal to many, for others it's just another hassle. There are too many variables involved. Not only do you have to worry about talking with your date the first time, there are other worries. First, planning the first date. Where do we go? When do we go? It has to be during the day. In a public place. What about gifts? Do I have to bring something along? These are just a couple of the many concerns. Worrying like this can turn even the best chance at love into a fiasco.

There is another kind of dating that has become popular in recent years. It is called the singles dating event. One of these types of events, speed dating, became extremely popular after the movie Hitch came out in 2005. Speed dating works like this: Singles meet at these sponsored events. The hosts usually allow the women to sit at small tables. The men, as many as twenty of them, walk from table to table. They talk with the women for six minutes. Once the six minutes are up they move to the next table. Both women and men keep track of who they liked. Who they didn't like. Who they might want to go out with. At the end of the night, the information is compared. Matches are provided with each other's contact information. The ‘couples' take it from there. Other singles dating events include singles cruises, weekend getaways, and beer/wine-tasting nights.
