Carpets in the Ancient Times



A carpet represents any kind of loom-woven or felted textile. Before the eighteenth century, carpets were not used on the floors. Instead they were seen as a wall and table covering. It was only in the eighteenth century that carpets were used in European interiors and were now interchangeably used as a rug. The origin of carpet is owed to the Caucasians who had intensive trade relations with the Venetians during the third and second millennium BC. During these times, carpets were brought to the whole of Europe, and the Europeans used them as wall coverings and tablemats or runners. They were likewise used to cover benches, chests, and tables. In Italy, they were only used during festive occasions as hanging decorations in the balcony.

Carpets in the Present Time

In the present day, carpets are generally used as a floor covering for earth-beaten floors. Having them as floor covering originated in the Western and Central Asia and they were already seen as covering the floors of most houses in Asia and even in mosques and palaces. For the wealthy families in Europe, these floor coverings had dual function. Aside from being just plainly floor coverings with practical functions, they also serve as an aesthetic and visual display. The carpets are usually arranged in groups that allow simultaneous displays.

Carpets have now become a relevant asset in the home, and you see them in almost all luxurious homes that you visit. They have become significantly a part of the house furniture and a material investment as well.
