Considering the working lifestyle of modern times, one definitely needs a nice cozy home with comfortable furniture that soothes the tired body and mind. One can definitely imagine the popularity and demand that must be met by furniture that is made for comfortable reclining and resting. Comfort and relaxation brings to our mind club chairs and recliners.
Club chairs come under the category of luxury furniture that gives ultimate levels of comfort and relaxation. Club chairs are basically comfort chairs that are heavily upholstered and provided with stuffed arms and a reclining low back. In the past, these pieces of furniture served to meet the demanding relaxation and socializing needs of the high society. They were formal and high comfort providers, sought after for their unique appeal. Club chairs bring to our mind a picture of those English clubs that had smoking rooms filled with men enjoying the comforts of luxurious club chairs made of heavy wood on leather.
In the 1920s, club chairs typically came in dark colors, and were made of pig leather. The early form of club chairs had a distinct look because of the soft nails that were fashionably displayed. These club chairs were considered distinctly masculine, and were made of wood and leather mostly. The seats were covered with velvet, and were stuffed with straw, animal hair and feathers. All these were added to provide a softer feeling for the person enjoying the comfort of the seat.
Club chairs were the most popular piece of furniture for a very long time. In the Art Deco era, as is the case with other furniture, club chairs too changed to suit the latest fashion trends. They became more affordable. Club chairs were less ostentatious with a scaled down design. Instead of pig leather, sheep and cow hides were used more widely. In addition, the softer nails that were elegantly displayed earlier were less used, thereby providing a less formal appearance.
During these years, the French were also impressed by the popularity of these club chairs, and adopted the basic features and designed their own version to suit their needs. Bauhaus Wassily, which was the new version of club chairs, became popular. As is with the French in all aspects particularly in design and fashion, the new version of the club chairs was more modern and glamorous.
Club chairs remained popular all throughout the 1940s, but were temporarily stopped from production during the War. Post war, these club chairs came back in production, and continued to remain popular with increasing demand. There were some changes that were made on the new version of the post war club chair. Basically, animal hair and feathers were replaced by industrial foam, thanks to the innovative materials that were developed by the manufacturers. As far as looks were concerned, some changes happened here too. Club chairs came with more squared off arms, as against the rounded arms that were in practice earlier.
Even in the recent years, modified versions of club chairs are evident in the latest furniture stores and catalogs. To suit the needs of the current times, club chairs now come with weatherproof, ultra violet radiation resistant, and polypropylene covers.

The most common mistakes when it comes to club chairs are choosing the wrong colors, not determining your available space, using an ineffective layout, and not catering to your members. If you are currently making any of these mistakes, it is costing your club money in new memberships and food and beverage sales.
Choosing the wrong colors.
Whether we go with leather or upholstery, your club chairs are going to be a fixture in your club for years, possibly decades. Making a poor or misinformed color choice can be very costly.
Make sure you choose a solid color or a subtle stripe as opposed to a pattern. This allows you to change your d'cor without going to the expense and the trouble of changing the upholstery. Golf club members are accustomed to and expect a specific atmosphere in their golf or country club. They appreciate understated elegance, with a traditional rustic or preppy look. Therefore, it is important to choose neutral colors from nature that are colors traditionally associated with golf such as green, navy, cream and brown.
Not determining your available space.
Club chairs are known for their spacious comfort. They are large chairs that are angled for comfort, which means they use a lot of space compared to traditional chairs. If you order club chairs without measuring your available space in relation to the shape of the room, you could end up with chairs and tables that do not fit. And high end commercial club chairs are special order and cannot normally be returned.
When determining your available space, it is not enough to know the square footage of the room which is typically what the supplier will ask. You need to account for the available space, meaning what portion of the room is actually free for the right configuration of your club chairs. It is important that they are configured properly (see below) or you will have empty seats in your club.
Using an ineffective layout.
It is important that your club chairs provide the ultimate experience in comfort and luxury to your members. The goal is to get them so comfortable that they do not want to leave and habitually linger. This is what causes your food and beverage sales to be healthy.
The magic number is club seating is the number 4. Four people mean 2 couples. It also means a foursome on the golf course which means 2 teams competing in a round. The entire idea of club seating is to promote socializing in comfort. This is what causes your members and guests to linger. This means you want to arrange your chairs in groups of 4 around generous cocktail tables and card tables.
It is also important to make sure that each grouping of club chairs is able to easily see the television, the starting and finishing holes and other members as they arrive and leave.
Failing to pay attention to the needs of your members when you lay out your club chairs could result in a layout that does not promote comfort and socializing and hurts your bottom line.
Failing to cater to the needs of your members.
Not only should you choose club chairs that cater to your members need for comfort and luxury, but you should always remember why they joined your club to begin with. Being aware of why they joined and what they appreciate about your club will encourage them to use the club and to bring guests both of which will impact your bottom line. Bringing guests is the ultimate in viral marketing because the guests are your most likely new membership candidates. And members who bring guests are far more likely to use the restaurant and lounge which will increase your food and beverage sales.
Cater to their needs by remembering the little things. You should create little nook areas for members to read, conduct a private business meeting, or to take a private telephone call. Each of these areas should have mints, a pad and pen, and a telephone available.
