The main cause of hair loss is DHT (dihydrotestosterone). Finasteride works by stopping the conversion of testosterone to DHT, reducing DHT levels by up to 75%.
The well-known Finasteride product is Propecia. In a study, over 80% of the balding individuals who used it experienced rejuvenated growth, and about 5% commented that their improvement was dramatic.
As well as increasing the number of hairs, Propecia increases the shaft diameter of existing hairs. Most of the improvement, taking Finasteride, will come in the first year of use. Since the main purpose of this drug is to prevent further hair loss, I usually suggest it as a first-line treatment for younger patients, for whom maintaining the hair they have is of prime importance.
The studies mentioned above did show that there are some limited side effects. A very small number (less than 2%) showed erectile dysfunction and decreased libido, although the same complaints were found in about 1% of patients taking placebos. These effects are completely reversible if the drug is discontinued, and over half of patients who continued the drug with these side effects saw them disappear.
Finasteride has been around for over 14 years, and has not shown any long-term side effects.
Women should not use Finasteride. The drug acts on testosterone and will not have any effect on women, even in women with high testosterone levels. It has also been shown to cause defects in the sexual organs of male infants, so it is advised that pregnant females not take, or even handle, this drug. If the male is taking Finasteride, Merck feels confident that the trace amounts found in the semen do not put the fetus at risk. I sometimes hear this concern from patients, and suggest they use condoms during the pregnancy to completely eliminate the risk of Finasteride entering the woman's bloodstream.
Coconut Oil For Hair Loss
Acupuncture to the scalp is becoming one of the treatments of choice for men and women suffering from hair loss. People who suffer from the ailment opt to do it at the clinic of a therapist practicing alternative medicine, but there are some who do their own acupuncture therapy at home through the use of a device called the plum blossom hammer. Satisfied customers have attested to the benefits of using the plum blossom hammer for hair loss treatment.
The use of the plum blossom hammer for hair loss treatment is a relatively new concept in English-speaking nations. The plum blossom hammer is a very small hammer with that is placed with around five to seven needle points. This hammer is pressed gently against certain areas of the scalp, and its daily use is said to be an effective cure to hair loss. However, it should never be used without prior authorization and instruction from a therapist practicing acupuncture.
Acupuncture to the scalp is becoming one of the treatments of choice for men and women suffering from hair loss. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical treatment that operates on the philosophy that life force, more popularly known as "chi," flows through the body. The unhindered flow of chi promotes good health and wellness, while obstacles to the flow of chi results in certain illnesses, depending on where the chi is blocked. What acupuncture does is to eliminate these obstacles and correct the flow of chi into the body.
In Western terms, acupuncture is supposed to stimulate the nerve endings just underneath the skin through the insertion of long and fine needles. The stimulation of the nerve endings in the treated area results in the improvement of the circulation of blood to the affected area. An improved circulation of blood in the said area means that the damaged cells in the area will be repaired more quickly and easily, and that more nutrients needed to encourage and accelerate healing will be brought by the blood to the area. Improved blood circulation also entails the development of new cells to replace the dead and damaged ones in the area.
The daily use of the plum blossom hammer for hair loss treatment, while not really proven medically to completely heal hair loss, is at least effective in encouraging the growth of new cells in the hair follicles of the scalp. The growth of new cells always means that the re-growth of hair is still possible. Nonetheless, the plum blossom hammer should never be used without proper instruction from the acupuncture therapist.
