Company Credit Card Fraud

    View:
Many people enjoy the ease and convenience of paying for goods and services with a credit card. Unfortunately, some people become victims of the growing problem of credit card fraud. The first you may know of fraudulent activity on your credit card account is seeing unauthorized transactions on your statement.

Here are 12 simple steps you can use to minimize the possibility of fraud on your credit card account:

1. Keep both your personal and credit card information secure. Never email your credit card details to anyone. Sending information via email is not a secure method of transmitting data and can be intercepted by savy criminals.

2. When you receive a new credit card always sign it immediately. This prevents someone from finding your card and signing their name.

3. When you receive a replacement credit card always destroy the old card immediately. Cut the old card into at least three pieces or shred it.

4. Make sure you thoroughly destroy old receipts or any information that may have your credit card details printed on them. The most effective method is to use a shredder.

5. Open and read your credit card statement as soon as you receive it. Check to make sure you know what all the expenses on the statement are for.

6. If you see transactions on your credit card statement that you do not recognize, immediately contact your bank or credit card company and request verification of purchases and dispute those charges that you can't account for.

7. If you find that you have misplaced or lost your credit card for any reason, immediately Call the credit card issuing company and let them know. They will block the card to prevent any potential unauthorized use.

8. Never tell anyone your Personal Identification Number, which allows cash withdrawals using your credit card.

9. Make sure your Personal Identification Number is not easy to guess. Avoid using numbers that are easy to trace, for example do not use your date of birth, or your address. Ensure you use a different Personal Identification Number for each credit card you have.

10. Do not use an ATM if you suspect it has been tampered with. Report your suspicion to the bank that operates the ATM.

11. When you use your credit card in a retail store always keep a watch on your card while the clerk is processing your payment. Double check that it is your card that is returned to you.

12. If you use your credit card to make online purchases, always ensure the web pages where you input your credit card details are secure. A secure web page has a URL that begins https:// and has an image of a locked padlock in the bottom right hand corner of the browser window.

Following these simple precautions will reduce the possibility of you becoming a victim of credit card fraud. Your bank or credit card company may have further information on minimizing the risk of credit card fraud, so it is worth contacting them or reviewing their website.
Company Credit Card Fraud
Over the past several years, credit card fraud has become increasingly more common. It is a crime on the rise that costs credit card holders and issuers hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Regardless of how cautious you may be, there is no guarantee that you will not become a victim. But there are several steps you can take to minimize your chances of falling prey to credit card fraud.

1. As soon as you receive a new credit card, sign the back. If the card is lost or stolen before you sign it, anyone can sign it and use it without question, as their signature on the sale receipt will now match the signature on the card.

2. Look over your monthly statements carefully and watch for any suspicious charges. Notify your card issuers immediately if you notice any charges that you have not approved.

3. Once you have notified your card issuer of an unauthorized charge by phone, follow up in writing.

4. Save your charge receipts and use them to reconcile your monthly statements.

5. Never throw your credit card statements into the garbage. Most credit card theives find the information they need from searching through the trash. Credit card bills and statements should be shredded before being discarded. Any credit card offers received by mail should also be shredded, or theives can use them to open a credit card account in your name.

6. Always cut up expired cards before throwing them away. The part of the card that contains the account number should be cut into pieces too small to put back together.

7. Never write your account number on the outside of the payment envelope, or anywhere it can be seen through the envelope window.

8. Never give out your credit card number, or any other identifying information, over the phone unless you have initiated the call and you are sure you are speaking with a reputable company.

9. When using your credit card online, be sure the merchant web site is secure.

10. If you receive any email from any company asking you to "verify your account information", do not reply. No legitimate company will ask you to verify any information via email. This is a common online scam. Do not fall victim to it.

11. When signing a credit card receipt, put lines through any blank lines before signing. This prevents someone from adding to the total later.

12. Never write your PIN number on your card or keep it in your purse or wallet. If you should lose your these items, your PIN number can be used by a thief to empty out your account.

13. If you should move, be sure to update your mailing address with your credit card companies and banks, and have your mail forwarded to your new address.

14. Keep a list of all your credit cards, including your account numbers, PINs, expiration dates, and the phone number for each card. Keep this list in a secure place such as a safety deposit box. YOu will need this information in the case of your cards being lost or stolen.
