When to Choose Conductive Keratoplasty Over Lasik Surgery

There may also be some farsighted patients who find that CK is not right for them. For farsighted patients who have presbyopia, however, CK is turning into a choice option.

How Does Conductive Keratoplasty Work?

CK uses gentle heat emitted by radio waves to shrink the connective tissue that lies on the periphery of the individual's cornea. In the past, the connective tissue would often not remain stable after the shrinkage took place. In other words, the CK procedure was not permanent and vision would revert to where it was before CK.

However, now that there are better ways to perform CK, the results are much more satisfying. Since there is no long-term data, there are no guarantees as to whether the results will remain over an extended period. Individuals under 40 are not typical candidates for CK.

In general, CK is a good choice for people over 40 who have mild farsightedness with presbyopia. People who are younger and/or nearsighted will not benefit from the procedure. However, it is possible that will change in the future because of tests currently conducted on CK.
