You have various hair transplantation options offering baldness treatments. Two chief choices that you have are ? a.) Scalp Flap Surgery and b.) Scalp Reduction Surgery.
a.) Scalp Flap Surgery
In scalp flap surgery a skin flap and underlying tissues are moved from one scalp area to the other. The surgeon first cuts out a section of the scalp that lacks hair growth. Then he replaces it by a flap of hair-bearing scalp. The size and placement of the flap will be decided on the basis of your requirement. The operation scar will be covered by the relocated hair.
The objective of scalp flap surgery is to correct a non-traumatic cosmetic defect. Its other use is repairing a traumatic injury site and restoring its functionality and cosmetic appearance.
Repairing a skin defect resulting from congenital malformation is another is another use of this hair transplantation process.
Advantages of Scalp Flap Surgery ?
The advantages of this scalp flap surgery include natural frontal hairline, proper hair placemen in temporal areas, hair pattern distortion avoidance, etc.
Side effects ?
Apart from its advantages, the scalp flap surgery also has certain side effects. Hair transplantation through this process causes permanent hair loss at donor sites. The other outcomes include scarring at donor or recipient sites, blood supply failure to the flap, etc.
b.) Scalp Reduction Surgery
This hair transplantation technique is usually aimed at people with posterior baldness. It removes bald scalp and brings the half-bearing scalp closer to it, to fill in the bald area in the scalp. In this surgical technique, the surgeon will reduce your baldness by cutting out a segment of your bald scalp skin.
The hair transplantation process in scalp reduction surgery is divided into two parts. In the first part, the bald portion of the scalp is surgically removed. In the second part, the hair-bearing scalp is upwardly stretched to replace the removed bald scalp.
You might require the scalp reduction surgery to be conducted in combination with another surgical method - brow lifting. The latter's objective is o remove the frown lines from the forehead and crow's feet from around the eyes.
In your case the brow lifting can be carried out through scalp extension or scalp expansion device. This technique causes the hair-bearing scalp skin to be stretched causing better coverage to bald areas of the scalp.
The possible complications and side effects
The possible complications and side effects of scalp reduction surgery include scarring at the suture lines, scalp skin ?stretch back? at the excised bald area and central midline scar called slot deformity.
c.) Follicular hair transplants
Follicular hair transplants are known for their dependability and popularity. It is one of the baldness treatments with an increasing popularity.
In follicular hair transplants a graft is constituted of one follicular unit as it exists in nature.
What are follicular units?
Follicular units can be described as hair bundles growing together. Every unit is formed of about 1-4 terminal hair follicles. In case the problem arises from a genetic factor, healthy hair gets replaced by hair with smaller diameter and length.
A follicular unit contains 1-2 fine vellus hairs, oil glands, a small muscle and a collagen band surrounding the unit.
A follicular unit represents the skin's hair bearing structure. Its role is to ensure maximum growth of the hair.
The basic concept of follicular hair transplants says that a follicular unit is a physiological unit, and not a histological one.
The advantages of this technique
The advantages of this hair transplantation process include natural looking hair, more effective surgery thanks to stereoscopic microscopes for dissection, damage avoidance to the follicular unit, etc.
The disadvantage of the process
One disadvantage of the process is that it is a time consuming one.
Direct Hair Implant (DHI) ? DHI is the minimally invasive hair transplantation technique for follicular hair transplants. The process is devoid from the use of scalpel, stitches and a donor strip.
DHI is based on the transportation process called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
FUE is conducted through the use of custom-made, precise micro-surgical tools. It witnesses direct extraction of follicular units one by one, instead of dissection.
Advantage of FUE
A crucial advantage of FUR is the quality control possibility during the hair transplantation procedure. Moreover, the procedure is simple and painless.
Cost Of Hair Transplantation
Eyebrows occupy a very visible location on one's face and are critical to the appearance of the eye area. They frame the eye and serve as an important aesthetic landmark between the eye and the frontal scalp hairline. Significant loss or changes in eyebrow hair density are usually very noticeable and can be quite troubling. While eyebrow shapes and styles change over the years, thin or sparse eyebrows are not usually aesthetically desirable.
Hair transplants to the eyebrows can be done for both men and women. While most commonly done for eyebrows lost due to injury (lacerations, avulsions, burns), disease (alopecia areata, trichilomania), or age (thinning of the hair) it may also be done for cosmetic enhancement (thickening of the eyebrow and/or extension of the tail) as well. Thin eyebrows in women occur from a congenital thinness and limited ability for the eyebrows to grow or loss of eyebrow hairs due to excessive plucking.
Tattooing of the lost or thin eyebrow is a very common technique that is simple and quick to do with an immediate result. Unfortunately, eyebrow tattoos often look very unnatural with less than ideal color matches. Over time the tattoo often fades, turning into a blue-black color which is an even poorer color match. Eyebrow tattoos are not easily removed and I usually advise against it. It is better to do hair transplants right into the tattooed skin.
Hair transplantation to the eyebrow is a more refined technique of that used in scalp hair grafting. It is based on two important principles; individual follicular grafts and precise placement into the unique shape and orientation of eyebrow hairs. While the eyebrow area is not big (compared to the scalp), the harvesting and placement of individual follicles into the eyebrow is a meticulous procedure that can take almost as long as scalp hair transplant sessions.
Placement and proper angulation of the hairs is the key to a good, natural-looking eyebrow transplant. The eyebrow has hairs that have unique orientations in different parts of the eyebrow. The hair in the upper part of the middle of the eyebrow points upward to the hairline, while the hair on the tail will usually point towards the ears. The eyebrow hairs are also oriented much like a feather with the upper part of the eyebrow pointed slightly downward and the lower portion slightly upward forming a slight ridge.
Eyebrow hair transplantation may require more than one session of grafting to get the best results. Not all follicles completely survive each grafting session and optimal density of the eyebrow may require a second set of grafts. My goal is to get the best result in one session, not two, but hair transplant growth and density is not completely predictable. Second graft sessions are not done for one year after the first to give optimal time for the hair to grow and for the patient to adjust to the changes in the appearance of the eyebrow.
The hair used for eyebrow transplants comes from the scalp. Because most scalp hairs are more coarse than fine eyebrow hairs, the donor site is usually taken from the scalp hair right behind the ear. Scalp hair in this area is thinner and a better match for the eyebrows. Each eyebrow usually requires about 50 to 75 hair transplants, sometimes up to more than 100 per eyebrow depending upon the goals of the patient. These hair transplants, like the rest of the scalp, will continue to grow for the rest of your life and will need to be trimmed regularly. Over time, the transplanted scalp hairs will take on some of the characteristics of eyebrow hairs and growth will slow down. (eyebrow hair grow is about half that of scalp hairs)
Be aware that although the eyebrow hair transplants will be seen immediately after the procedure, the hair shaft attached to the follicle will fall out. In essence, follicle transplants are being done and the hair shaft is a good handle to place them. The hair shaft will quickly shed leaving the eyebrow looking like it did before the procedure. Hair growth from the follicle will require at least 3 months to become visible again and up to 6 to 9 months to grow in and see the final results.
There is no significant recovery from the procedure other than some crusting of the eyebrows and occasionally some slight upper eyelid swelling or bruising. There are no dressings used on the eyebrows other than ointment to keep them moist for the first few days. One can usually return to work within a few days.
As one can see, eyebrow hair transplants require much greater commitment and patience than eyebrow tattooing methods. But if one is looking for the most natural eyebrow result, particularly in a young person, eyebrow hair transplants may be a good long-term solution.
